Chapter 9: The Truth Buried in My Records
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
My brain refused to accept it.
*Patient demonstrates strong emotional regulation and healthy coping skills. No current concerns regarding maternal capability.*
I looked up.
“They lied.””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
Claire took the paper from my hand.
She read it quickly.
Then her expression changed.
“They used this against you.””
My hands trembled.
Cole hadn’t just misunderstood me.
He had twisted something designed to help me into evidence against me.
My mother’s betrayal hurt.
Cole’s betrayal hurt.
But this felt different.
Because they had taken my fears.
My private moments.
My struggles.
And turned them into a weapon.
“I want to know everything.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
She sat down.
“Cole started preparing after you and him had that argument about your mother moving closer.””
I remembered.
It was a year ago.
Darla had talked about moving nearby after retirement.
I had worried about boundaries.
Cole had accused me of not appreciating her.
“I thought it was just a fight.””
Rachel shook her head.
“It wasn’t.””
She pulled out her phone.
“He told me he was frustrated because you were becoming ‘too difficult.’”
My face tightened.
“Difficult.””
“He said pregnancy would make it worse.””
I looked down at my stomach.
Our daughter.
The child he claimed to love.
The child he planned around.
Rachel continued.
“He wanted someone who could support his story.””
“His story?””
“That you were unstable.””
I stood.
“He was creating a story where he was the victim.””
“Yes.””
A cold calm settled over me.
The kind that comes when the pain becomes too big to feel.
“Where is he now?””
Claire looked at me.
“Emily.””
“I need to know.””
Rachel hesitated.
“He’s meeting with his attorney.””
My heart sank.
“How do you know?””
“He contacted me.””
“Why?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“He wanted me to say you were emotionally unstable.””
I stared.
“He asked you to lie?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Rachel shook her head.
“I recorded the conversation.””
She handed me another file.
I pressed play.
Cole’s voice filled the room.
“Rachel, you know how she gets.””
My blood ran cold.
Another voice.
Rachel.
“What do you want me to say?””
Cole answered:
“Just that she was unpredictable.””
The recording continued.
“I need people to understand why the baby would be safer with me.””
I stopped it.
I couldn’t listen anymore.
Claire covered her mouth.
“He’s disgusting.””
I stared at the phone.
No tears came.
Not anymore.
“I’m going to fight him.””
Claire looked at me.
“Yes.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m not fighting him because I hate him.””
I looked toward the nursery.
“I’m fighting him because my daughter deserves a mother who protects her.””
That night, I sat alone in the nursery.
The walls were painted soft yellow.
A tiny crib sat against the window.
Everything was ready.
Except the family I thought would fill it.
I placed my hand on the crib.
“I’m sorry.””
My voice broke.
“I’m sorry your first story is this one.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Cole.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me open it.
There was a photo attached.
A photo of a document.
At the bottom was my signature.
My real signature.
The message said:
*You need to understand something, Emily. You already agreed to give me control.*
I stared at the screen.
Then I zoomed in on the document.
Because there was one detail I hadn’t noticed before.
A witness signature.
A name.
A name that made my entire body go cold.
Because the witness wasn’t Cole.
May you like
It wasn’t Darla.
It was someone I trusted more than anyone.
