Chapter 5: The Plan Behind the Smile

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

I stared at Rachel.

The room felt unreal.

Like I was watching someone else’s life happen from far away.

Take my daughter.

Those words repeated in my head.

Take.

My.

Daughter.

Cole immediately shook his head.

“That’s insane.””

Rachel looked at him.

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

“You told me everything.””

“I was angry.””

“No,” Rachel said.

“You were planning.””

My hand tightened over my belly.

“Cole.””

He looked at me.

I searched his face for the man I married.

The man who held my hand during doctor appointments.

The man who cried when we heard our baby’s heartbeat.

But all I saw was someone I didn’t recognize.

“What does she mean?””

He swallowed.

“Emily, I never wanted to hurt you.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

He looked down.

“I thought…”

“What?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I thought maybe you weren’t stable enough to raise a child alone.””

My heart stopped.

“Alone?””

The anger came before the pain.

“You were going to leave.””

“No.””

“You were going to leave me, but you wanted my daughter?””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then explain it.””

He couldn’t.

Rachel spoke instead.

“He talked about custody.””

Cole glared at her.

“Stop.””

“No.””

Rachel’s voice shook.

“You don’t get to hide behind apologies anymore.””

She turned to me.

“He asked questions about custody laws. He asked what would happen if a mother was emotionally unstable after childbirth.””

I felt dizzy.

“I’m pregnant.””

Rachel nodded sadly.

“I know.””

“I’m not unstable.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Nobody answered.

And somehow, that silence was the cruelest thing.

My mother suddenly spoke.

“Cole told me Emily needed help.””

I looked at Darla.

She looked ashamed.

“He said you were overwhelmed. He said after the baby came, you might not be able to handle everything.””

My mouth opened.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

My own mother.

The woman who was supposed to protect me.

“You believed him?””

Darla cried.

“I was wrong.””

“You helped him.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice became sharper.

“You don’t know what you did.””

The room fell quiet.

I stood slowly.

My body felt heavy.

But my mind was clear.

For the first time all night, something inside me stopped breaking.

Something inside me started fighting.

“Everyone leave.””

Cole stepped forward.

“Emily—”

“Leave.””

“I want to fix this.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t fix a house after you burn it down.””

His face fell.

Darla reached toward me.

“I love you.””

I moved away.

“You loved the idea of me.””

That hurt her.

Good.

Because I had been hurting alone for months without even knowing it.

Rachel stood.

“I’ll go.””

Before she reached the door, I stopped her.

“Wait.””

She turned.

“Why are you helping me?””

Rachel looked down.

“Because I spent too long believing his lies.””

Her voice cracked.

“And because I heard something else.””

I froze.

“What?””

She pulled out her phone again.

“There was another conversation.””

Cole’s face changed instantly.

“Rachel.””

She ignored him.

“It happened last week.””

She pressed play.

At first, there was only background noise.

Then Cole’s voice.

My husband’s voice.

Clear.

Cold.

“She won’t fight me. She trusts me too much.””

I stopped breathing.

Another voice answered.

I recognized it.

Darla.

“She’s my daughter. I know how she thinks.””

My knees almost gave out.

The recording continued.

Cole said:

“Once the baby is born, everything changes.””

Darla whispered:

“And Emily?””

Cole answered:

“She’ll do what we tell her.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at my mother.

Then my husband.

Two people who had spent my entire life telling me they loved me.

Two people who had decided they knew me better than I knew myself.

“You planned this.””

Cole looked desperate.

“Emily, listen—”

“No.””

I walked toward the door.

“You’re leaving.””

“Where am I supposed to go?””

I looked at him.

For the first time, I didn’t care.

“That’s not my problem anymore.””

After they left, I locked the door.

Then I stood alone in the dark living room.

My daughter moved inside me.

A tiny kick.

A reminder.

I put my hand over my stomach and whispered:

“I promise you, nobody takes you from me.””

But when I looked down at my phone, I saw a notification waiting.

An email from an unknown sender.

The subject line made my blood run cold.

*Proof of what your husband did before the baby shower.*
