Chapter 15: The Daughter Hidden in Plain Sight
I knew her immediately.
Even before Marcus said her name.
Because I had seen her dozens of times.
At family dinners.
At holidays.
At birthdays.
She stood near the entrance, frozen.
Watching me.
Watching the folder on the table.
Watching the truth finally reach me.
“Emily…”
Her voice was shaking.
I couldn’t move.
“Who is she?””
Marcus looked at her.
Then at me.
“This is Lily.””
My heart raced.
I knew that name.
Lily.
My mother’s friend’s daughter.
The girl who used to babysit my cousins.
The girl who came to our house every Christmas.
The girl my mother always called “a special part of our family.””
I looked at Darla’s daughter.
“No.””
Lily started crying.
“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””
I stared.
“Find out what?””
She looked down.
“I’m your sister.””
The world went silent.
I couldn’t hear anything around me.
Not the coffee machines.
Not the people talking.
Nothing.
“My sister?””
She nodded.
“My biological father is Cole.””
I sat back down.
Because my body couldn’t handle standing anymore.
Marcus spoke quietly.
“Cole and Darla had a relationship before he met you.””
Lily wiped her tears.
“My mother was young. She was scared.””
I looked at her.
“And then?””
“She gave me up.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
Lily looked away.
“Because Cole didn’t want anyone knowing.””
Of course.
Another secret.
Another person sacrificed so Cole could protect himself.
I looked at Lily.
“How did you find out?””
She smiled sadly.
“My whole life, I knew something was wrong.””
She reached into her bag.
“My mother kept this.””
She placed an envelope on the table.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Cole’s name.
I felt sick.
“He knew you existed.””
“Yes.””
“And he still…”
I couldn’t finish.
Lily nodded.
“He built a new family and pretended I didn’t exist.””
I thought about my daughter.
About the way Cole smiled when he felt her kick.
The way he talked about being a father.
Suddenly, I wondered if he loved her.
Or if he only loved what she represented.
Control.
A legacy.
A perfect image.
“What does he want now?””
Lily looked at me.
“He wants two things.””
“What?””
“Your daughter.””
A pause.
“And his secret protected.””
I looked at the documents.
The lies.
The plans.
The years of manipulation.
Then something changed.
The fear inside me became something else.
Determination.
“He’s not getting her.””
Lily nodded.
“That’s why I came.””
“You could have stayed silent.””
“Yes.””
“But you didn’t.””
She looked at me.
“Because I spent my whole life wishing someone had protected me.””
That sentence broke through my anger.
Because she understood.
She knew what it felt like to be hidden.
To be treated like a problem instead of a person.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Cole.
I opened it.
*We need to talk. There are things you don’t know about Lily.*
I looked at Marcus.
Then Lily.
Another message appeared.
*If you expose me, you’ll destroy your mother too.*
I stared at the screen.
He was still trying to control the story.
Still trying to make everyone afraid.
But this time, he had made one mistake.
He forgot something important.
The people he hurt were no longer protecting him.
I stood.
“Where is he?””
Lily looked surprised.
“Emily?””
I held the phone tightly.
“I’m done discovering his secrets.””
I looked at the three people sitting with me.
“Now he’s going to answer for them.””
But when I arrived at the place where Cole asked me to meet him, I discovered he wasn’t alone.
And the person standing beside him was the last person I expected to see.
My lawyer.
May you like
The one I hired to protect me.
The one who was supposed to be on my side.
