Chapter 6: The Evidence He Forgot

I stared at the email for almost a full minute.

I didn’t open it.

Not because I was afraid of what I would find.

Because I was afraid I already knew.

My entire marriage had become a locked room.

Every time I opened a door, there was another nightmare waiting behind it.

But I had learned something that night.

The truth hurt.

The lies destroyed.

I tapped the email.

There was one attachment.

A folder.

Inside were photos.

Documents.

Messages.

My hands shook as I opened the first file.

It was a screenshot of a conversation.

Between Cole and someone named *Mark Benson*.

I didn’t recognize the name.

The message was from three months earlier.

*Cole: I need this done before the baby comes.*

*Mark: Are you sure about this?*

*Cole: She won’t know. She trusts me.*

I felt sick.

I opened the next file.

A photograph.

Cole sitting at a table with a man I had never seen.

There were papers between them.

The next file was a document.

My eyes scanned the words.

Custody evaluation.

Temporary guardianship.

My heart started racing.

He wasn’t just thinking about taking my daughter.

He had started preparing.

I grabbed the edge of the table to steady myself.

The front door was locked.

The house was quiet.

But I suddenly felt like I was surrounded by strangers.

Then my phone rang.

Claire.

I answered immediately.

“Emily?””

The second I heard her voice, I started crying.

Not the kind of crying I had done earlier.

The kind where your body finally gives up pretending it’s strong.

“Claire…”

“I’m coming over.””

“I don’t even know what happened.””

“Yes, you do.””

Her voice softened.

“You found out who they really are.””

I closed my eyes.

“I feel stupid.””

“No.””

“I trusted them.””

“That doesn’t make you stupid.””

I looked at the documents again.

“He was planning to take my baby.””

Claire went silent.

“What?””

I sent her the files.

A few seconds later, she gasped.

“Oh my God.””

“I don’t know what to do.””

“You protect yourself.””

“How?””

Her answer came immediately.

“First, you don’t talk to him alone.””

I looked around the empty house.

“I already did.””

“Emily.””

“I know.””

A knock came from the front door.

I froze.

Claire heard it.

“Who is that?””

“I don’t know.””

The knock came again.

This time louder.

I walked toward the door slowly.

My heart pounded.

“Emily, don’t open it.””

I looked through the window.

A man stood outside.

Not Cole.

Not Darla.

A stranger.

He held a folder in his hand.

I kept the door locked.

“Who are you?””

The man looked directly at me.

“My name is Mark Benson.””

My blood went cold.

The same name from the documents.

“What do you want?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“I need to apologize.””

“For what?””

He lowered his voice.

“For helping your husband build a case against you.””

I stepped back.

The room started spinning.

“You worked with him?””

“Yes.””

“Why are you here?””

He looked down at the folder.

“Because after seeing what he planned to do…”

He swallowed.

“I realized I wasn’t helping a father protect his child.””

A pause.

“I was helping a man steal one.””

My hand moved protectively over my belly.

“Why should I believe you?””

He looked at me through the glass.

“Because there’s something in this folder that Cole never wanted you to see.””

The baby moved beneath my hand.

I felt tears fill my eyes.

“What?””

Mark lifted the folder slightly.

“Proof that your husband’s plan started long before you got pregnant.””

I stared at him.

And I knew my life was about to fall apart one more time.

Because if what was inside that folder was true…

May you like

Then the man I married had never been building a family with me.

He had been building a way to replace me.
