Chapter 7: The Folder He Left Behind

I didn’t open the door.

Not immediately.

For the first time in twelve hours, I made a decision without anyone else’s voice inside my head.

Not Cole’s.

Not Darla’s.

Not Rachel’s.

Mine.

I kept my hand on the lock and stared at the man standing outside.

Mark Benson.

The person who had helped my husband build a case against me.

The person who had suddenly decided he had a conscience.

That was not something I trusted.

“You need to leave.””

Mark looked down.

“I understand why you don’t believe me.””

“That’s an understatement.””

He nodded slowly.

“But if I wanted to hurt you, I wouldn’t be standing here warning you.””

I almost opened the door.

Almost.

Then I remembered how many times I had trusted people because they sounded sincere.

“I need proof.””

Mark lifted the folder.

“That’s what this is.””

I looked at it.

“What exactly is inside?””

“Everything Cole gave me.””

The words made my stomach twist.

“Everything?””

“He hired me six months ago.””

Six months.

The same amount of time my mother had been hiding her relationship with him.

The same amount of time I had been carrying our daughter.

“What did he hire you for?””

Mark looked uncomfortable.

“To collect information.””

“About me?””

“Yes.””

My throat tightened.

“What kind of information?””

He hesitated.

Then answered.

“Your mental health. Your finances. Your family history. Anything that could make you look unstable in court.””

I stepped back.

The hallway suddenly felt too small.

“He was building a case against me.””

Mark nodded.

“I’m sorry.””

I laughed quietly.

It wasn’t because anything was funny.

It was because my mind couldn’t process how cruel someone could be while smiling at you every day.

“You knew he was my husband.””

“Yes.””

“You knew I was pregnant.””

“Yes.””

“And you still helped him.””

His face dropped.

“I did.””

At least he admitted it.

That was more than Cole had done.

I unlocked the door but didn’t open it fully.

“Put the folder on the ground.””

Mark looked surprised.

“Emily—”

“Do it.””

He placed the folder near the doorway.

Then he stepped back.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””

“No.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

I picked up the folder after he walked away.

I watched him disappear down the driveway.

Then I locked the door again.

My hands were shaking as I carried the folder to the table.

Claire arrived twenty minutes later.

She barely closed the door before hugging me.

I broke instantly.

“I don’t understand how I missed it.””

Claire held me tighter.

“You didn’t miss it.””

“I did.””

“No.””

She pulled back and looked at me.

“Someone lied to you. That’s different.””

I wiped my face.

“I feel like my whole marriage was fake.””

Claire glanced at the folder.

“Is that what I think it is?””

I nodded.

Together, we opened it.

The first page was a summary.

A timeline.

Cole’s plan.

The words blurred.

*Objective: Establish primary custody after birth.*

My chest tightened.

Claire grabbed my hand.

“Emily…”

I kept reading.

*Subject demonstrates emotional dependency. Strong attachment to spouse. Limited support system.*

I laughed bitterly.

“He wrote that like I was a project.””

The next pages were worse.

He had documented arguments we had.

Normal marriage disagreements.

Times I cried.

Times I was stressed.

He had collected every vulnerable moment and turned it into evidence.

“He was waiting for me to break.””

Claire’s expression hardened.

“He was creating the reason to hurt you.””

I turned another page.

Then I froze.

There was a photograph.

A photo of Cole and Mark sitting outside a restaurant.

The date was printed underneath.

Two years ago.

Before I was pregnant.

Before the baby.

Before the supposed problems in our marriage.

I looked closer.

There was a handwritten note beside it.

*Initial discussion: possible future custody strategy.*

My breathing stopped.

Two years.

He had been thinking about this before our daughter even existed.

Before I ever knew there was something wrong.

Claire whispered:

“Emily…”

I turned the page.

And found something even worse.

A document with my signature.

A signature I didn’t remember giving.

My blood ran cold.

“What is this?””

Claire leaned closer.

“It’s a power of attorney.””

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

The document was dated one year earlier.

The same month Cole convinced me to sign “insurance paperwork.””

I remembered that night.

He had sat beside me on the couch.

He had kissed my forehead.

He had said:

“Just boring adult stuff, Em. Nothing important.””

I covered my mouth.

The man I loved had been preparing for war.

And I had been helping him load the weapons.

Then Claire pointed at the bottom of the page.

“There’s something else.””

I looked.

A second signature.

Darla’s.

My mother had signed too.

I felt numb.

Before I could say anything, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Cole.

*We need to talk. I know what Mark gave you.*

I stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

*You don’t understand what’s really happening.*

Then one more.

*Your mother is the reason this started.*

I looked at Claire.

May you like

She looked back at me.

And suddenly, I wasn’t sure who I was supposed to be afraid of anymore.
