Chapter 2: The Secret Everyone Hid

I don’t remember walking into the living room.

I remember the decorations.

That’s what stayed with me.

Pink ribbons hung from the ceiling. A banner with my daughter’s name stretched across the wall. A table was covered with gifts wrapped in soft colors, each one chosen by people who believed my family was happy.

My sister Claire looked up first.

Her smile disappeared immediately.

“Emily?””

Everyone turned.

I must have looked terrible.

My face was wet with tears. My hands were shaking. My dress suddenly felt too tight around my stomach.

Cole followed behind me.

Darla came after him.

And somehow, that made everything worse.

Because everyone saw us.

Everyone saw the three people who were supposed to be the center of this celebration.

My aunt stood from her chair.

“What happened?””

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

How do you tell a room full of people that the man they just congratulated had been kissing your mother five minutes earlier?

How do you say the words without making them real?

Cole stepped forward.

“Everyone, there’s been a misunderstanding.””

I turned toward him.

A misunderstanding.

My sister’s eyebrows pulled together.

“Emily?””

I looked at Claire.

She had always been the person I called when life hurt.

But I couldn’t say it.

Not yet.

Because once I said it, the last pieces of my old life would disappear.

Darla suddenly spoke.

“It’s my fault.””

The room went quiet.

My mother looked smaller than I had ever seen her.

“I made a mistake.””

A few people exchanged confused looks.

Cole immediately looked at her.

“Darla—”

“No,” she interrupted.

Her voice shook.

“I need to tell the truth.””

I stared at her.

The truth.

That word felt almost insulting coming from her.

My mother folded her hands together.

“I have been struggling for months.””

“With what?”” Claire asked.

Darla looked at me.

“With feelings I should have never allowed myself to have.””

My stomach dropped.

A woman near the couch covered her mouth.

Cole looked uncomfortable.

But not surprised.

That told me everything.

“You knew,” I whispered.

He looked at me.

“Emily—”

“You knew.””

Cole swallowed.

“I knew it was wrong.””

The room erupted.

Questions. Shock. Anger.

My aunt told him to leave.

Claire moved toward me.

But I couldn’t hear any of it clearly.

Because the man I married had admitted he knew.

He hadn’t been tricked.

He hadn’t discovered it at the same moment I did.

He had carried that secret while sleeping beside me.

While painting the nursery.

While feeling our daughter move beneath my hand.

I looked at Cole.

“When did it start?””

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“How long?””

“Emily…”

“How long?””

Darla started crying again.

“Six months.””

The room became completely silent.

Six months.

I felt dizzy.

Six months ago, Cole and I had celebrated finding out we were having a baby.

Six months ago, my mother had hugged me and cried with happiness.

Six months ago, they had both been looking me in the eye while hiding this.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Emily, sit down.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t want to sit.””

I looked around at everyone.

“I want everyone to leave.””

Nobody moved.

“Please.””

My voice broke.

“This was supposed to be a celebration for my daughter. I don’t want her first memory of this day to be everyone watching me fall apart.””

People slowly began collecting their things.

The party ended quietly.

No laughter.

No pictures.

No congratulations.

Just whispers and uncomfortable glances.

An hour later, the house was finally empty.

Except for three people.

Me.

Cole.

And Darla.

The silence was unbearable.

Cole stood near the doorway.

“Emily, please.””

I sat on the couch with one hand over my stomach.

“Tell me why.””

He looked down.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Darla stepped forward.

“I can explain.””

I looked at her.

“You lost the right to explain when you kissed my husband in my kitchen.””

She flinched.

Then Cole’s phone buzzed.

The sound cut through the silence.

He looked at the screen.

And his entire face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

I stood slowly.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

“Cole?””

He turned the phone around.

There was a message from an unknown number.

One sentence.

*She deserves to know what happened before you tell her the rest.*

My heart started pounding.

I looked at him.

“What rest?””

Cole stared at the message.

May you like

Then he whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“Emily… your mother wasn’t the first person.””
