Chapter 11: The Secret Between Sisters

The next morning, I woke up feeling like I hadn’t slept at all.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

The kind of silence that comes after a storm when you’re still waiting for more damage.

Claire was sleeping on the couch.

She had stayed because she didn’t want me alone.

But now I didn’t know if that made me feel safer.

Or more afraid.

Cole’s words kept repeating.

Ask your sister what she signed.

I hated that a part of me believed him.

Because he had been right before.

He had known things.

Secrets.

Weaknesses.

Things people thought they could hide from me.

I made coffee.

Then I sat across from Claire.

“Wake up.””

Her eyes opened slowly.

She looked at me.

And immediately knew.

“What happened?””

“Cole said I should ask you what you signed.””

Her face fell.

I felt my heart sink.

“Claire.””

She sat up.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

Those words destroyed the last bit of hope I had.

“What did you sign?””

She looked down.

“A statement.””

“What kind of statement?””

She swallowed.

“One saying I had concerns about how stressed you were.””

I stood.

“No.””

“Emily—”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You did it too?””

“No.””

“Then what is it?””

“I never gave it to him.””

I stopped.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“He asked me to write it.””

“Why?””

“He said he needed it for his lawyer.””

I stared.

“And you wrote it?””

She nodded slowly.

“But I never signed it.””

“Then why are you hiding it?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I was ashamed.””

I looked away.

She wasn’t Cole.

She wasn’t Darla.

But she had still kept something from me.

And after everything, secrets felt like knives.

“Where is it?””

“In my car.””

“Get it.””

She nodded.

Ten minutes later, she returned with a folded piece of paper.

I opened it.

The words were painful.

Not because they were true.

Because they sounded like my sister.

*Emily has always struggled with pressure and emotional situations.*

*She becomes overwhelmed easily.*

*She can be unpredictable when under stress.*

I looked at Claire.

“You wrote this.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing you.””

I laughed sadly.

“You should have thought about that before helping him.””

“I know.””

She stepped closer.

“I was wrong.””

I folded the paper.

“Why didn’t you give it to him?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because after I wrote it, I read it again.””

She looked down.

“And I realized I wasn’t describing you.””

A pause.

“I was describing what he wanted people to believe about you.””

The room was quiet.

For the first time in days, I felt someone understood.

Not my pain.

The truth.

I sat down.

“I don’t know how to trust anyone anymore.””

Claire nodded.

“I know.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Is this Emily Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Dr. Melissa Grant.””

I sat up.

The name sounded familiar.

“Why are you calling?””

There was a pause.

Then:

“Because I reviewed the documents your husband submitted.””

My stomach tightened.

“What documents?””

“The custody preparation materials.””

I closed my eyes.

“And?””

Her voice became careful.

“Emily, there is something you need to know.””

“What?””

“The documents include medical claims about you.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“They’re false.””

“I know.””

I froze.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you calling?””

Another pause.

“Because the person who created those claims wasn’t your husband.””

My breath stopped.

“What?””

Dr. Grant continued.

“The original complaint came from a family member.””

My heart started pounding.

“Who?””

The answer came quietly.

May you like

And it changed everything.

“Your mother.””
