Chapter 17: The Last Lie Before Birth
The hospital hallway smelled like disinfectant and fear.
That was the only way I could describe it.
Everything was clean.
Everything was bright.
Everything looked safe.
But I had learned appearances meant nothing.
My doctor sat across from me with a folder in her hands.
“Emily, I want you to understand something.””
I nodded.
“Okay.””
“Your records were accessed using authorization.””
My heart sank.
“Meaning?””
“Someone had permission.””
I stared.
“Whose permission?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“That’s the problem.””
She opened the folder.
“The request came from a person listed as your emergency contact.””
My stomach tightened.
“Cole?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
I felt confused.
“Then who?””
She turned the paper toward me.
The name was written clearly.
Darla Carter.
My mother.
I closed my eyes.
I didn’t cry.
I didn’t even feel surprised anymore.
That scared me.
Because betrayal had become normal.
“What did she access?””
The doctor looked down.
“Your pregnancy history.””
“Why?””
“She requested information about delivery plans.””
I frowned.
“Delivery plans?””
“Yes.””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
“She wanted to know when I would give birth.””
The doctor didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I already understood.
They were planning around me.
Around my body.
Around my child.
As if I was not a person.
Just a doorway to something they wanted.
When I left the hospital, Claire was waiting outside.
She immediately stood.
“What happened?””
I handed her the papers.
Her face changed.
“Your mom?””
I nodded.
“She’s still helping him.””
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t understand her.””
“I do.””
Claire looked at me.
I continued:
“She’s afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing the life she imagined.””
Claire was quiet.
That was the sad part.
I finally understood everyone.
And understanding them didn’t make the damage disappear.
That night, I made a decision.
I called Cole.
He answered immediately.
“I knew you’d call.””
“I want to meet.””
Silence.
“Why?””
“Because I want the truth.””
A pause.
“You already have.””
“No.””
I looked at the nursery.
“I have pieces.””
My voice became colder.
“I want the whole story.””
He agreed.
We met at the old park near our first apartment.
The place where he proposed.
The place where I once thought my future began.
He looked tired.
Older.
But I felt nothing.
“Why here?””
“Because I wanted to remember who we were.””
I stared at him.
“Don’t.””
He looked hurt.
But I didn’t care.
“Tell me about Lily.””
His expression changed.
“I knew you’d find out.””
“Did you love her mother?””
He looked away.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“And my mother?””
Another silence.
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
“Then me?””
He looked at me.
“I cared about you.””
Cared.
Not loved.
Not the word I spent years believing.
“Why marry me?””
He took a breath.
“At first?””
I nodded.
“At first, you were a way into their world.””
The pain was sharp.
But I stayed standing.
“And later?””
His face changed.
“Later it became complicated.””
“Because you loved me?””
He didn’t answer.
Because he couldn’t.
“You never loved me.””
“I did.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You loved what I gave you.””
He looked down.
The silence was confirmation.
Then he said:
“There’s something else.””
I froze.
“What?””
“The baby.””
I stared.
“What about her?””
He swallowed.
“The paternity issue isn’t what you think.””
My heart started pounding.
“You’re her father.””
“Yes.””
I relaxed slightly.
Then he continued.
“But the DNA test you saw was changed.””
I felt cold.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Someone switched the results.””
My breath caught.
“Who?””
He looked away.
“I don’t know.””
For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“No. That’s impossible.””
He looked at me.
“Emily…”
“What?””
He ended the call slowly.
“The original DNA test was found.””
I stared.
“And?””
His voice was barely a whisper.
“It says I’m not the father.””
The world stopped.
Because after everything.
After all the lies.
May you like
After all the secrets.
There was one truth nobody had been prepared for.
