Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
Rachel stood on my porch like a ghost from a life I thought I understood.
The woman my husband called “just a friend.””
The woman whose name I had seen on his phone.
The woman he had defended when I asked why she was texting him after midnight.
“Emily,” Rachel whispered.
“I know this isn’t the right time.””
I almost laughed.
The right time.
There was no right time to find out your husband had been lying to you.
There was no right time to discover your mother was one of the people he betrayed you with.
There was no right time for a stranger to show up at your door and look at your unborn child like she was carrying a piece of information that could change everything.
Cole moved behind me.
“Rachel, you shouldn’t be here.””
Her eyes immediately moved to him.
“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””
The silence that followed was heavy.
I looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel took a deep breath.
“I should have told you sooner.””
I stepped aside and opened the door wider.
“Then come inside.””
Cole shook his head.
“Emily, don’t.””
I turned toward him.
“Why?””
He didn’t answer.
That was becoming his favorite response.
No answer.
No explanation.
Just silence until I was forced to accept the pain on my own.
Rachel walked inside slowly.
She looked uncomfortable seeing Darla there.
My mother stood near the kitchen, arms crossed tightly around herself.
“You knew about him and me?”” Darla asked.
Rachel looked at her.
“I knew he was seeing you.””
Darla’s face changed.
“What?””
I felt my stomach drop.
Cole immediately stepped forward.
“That’s not what happened.””
Rachel looked at him.
“Don’t lie anymore.””
The room went still.
I watched my husband’s face.
He looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
And that scared me more.
“Sit down,” I said.
Nobody moved.
“Sit.””
Something in my voice made them listen.
I sat on the couch.
My hand stayed over my belly.
Rachel sat across from me.
“I met Cole two years ago at work.””
“I know.””
“No,” she said softly.
“You know what he told you.””
That sentence hurt.
Because it was true.
Rachel looked down.
“He told me he was unhappy in his marriage.””
I looked at Cole.
He looked away.
“He told me you two were basically roommates.””
A bitter smile crossed my face.
“Of course he did.””
“He said you only stayed together because of appearances.””
My eyes filled.
That was the lie that hurt the most.
Because while I was planning our daughter’s nursery, he was telling another woman our marriage was already dead.
Rachel continued.
“I believed him.””
Darla laughed bitterly.
“So you’re saying you were fooled too?””
Rachel looked at her.
“No.””
The word was quiet.
“I’m saying I was wrong.””
She reached into her purse and pulled out her phone.
“I found out he was still sleeping with you after he started seeing Darla.””
The air disappeared from my lungs.
I stared at Cole.
“You were with her too?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“I found messages.””
She unlocked her phone.
“I saw everything.””
I didn’t want to look.
I really didn’t.
But I did.
Because I had spent months living inside a lie.
I deserved to see the truth.
Rachel showed me screenshots.
Messages between Cole and her.
Messages between Cole and Darla.
Dates.
Times.
Promises.
Lies.
My hands started shaking.
One message from Cole to Rachel made my chest tighten.
*I just need time before I leave Emily.*
I looked at him.
“Leave me?””
His face went pale.
“Emily…”
“You were planning to leave me?””
“No.””
Rachel spoke quietly.
“He was.””
The room became unbearable.
Darla stood suddenly.
“You said you loved me.””
Cole looked at her.
“I was confused.””
She stared at him.
“You ruined your marriage and destroyed my relationship with my daughter because you were confused?””
I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
Then I remembered her hand on my stomach.
Her smile when she felt my baby move.
I remembered how she hugged me and said she couldn’t wait to be a grandmother.
“You all knew,” I whispered.
Nobody spoke.
“You all knew something about my life that I didn’t.””
Rachel lowered her head.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“Why come now?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation told me there was more.
“Rachel.””
She looked at me.
“Why now?””
Her fingers tightened around her phone.
“Because I found out why Cole never left.””
Cole’s expression changed.
“Rachel, stop.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
Rachel swallowed.
“Because it wasn’t just about you, Emily.””
My heart started pounding.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at my stomach.
Then back at me.
“He wasn’t planning to leave after the baby was born.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What was he planning?””
Rachel looked at Cole.
May you like
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“He was planning to take your daughter.””
