Chapter 8: The Family We Never Knew
The room went silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
I stared at Dr. Harris’s neck.
The birthmark.
The same strange crescent shape.
Mine.
Emma’s.
And now his.
“What are you?””
The question slipped out before I could stop it.
Dr. Harris looked almost amused.
“That’s the wrong question.””
“Then what’s the right one?””
He looked at Emma.
“Who are you?””
Emma stepped back.
“I’m Emma.””
“No.””
His voice was gentle.
Almost too gentle.
“You are the reason all of this happened.””
Megan grabbed Emma’s hand.
“Don’t listen.””
Dr. Harris ignored her.
“Your daughter was born with something unusual.””
I felt sick.
“She’s a child.””
“Yes.””
His expression softened.
“And that’s why I tried to protect her.””
I stared.
“You don’t get to say that.””
“You think I’m the villain because you remember pieces.””
“Because you lied.””
“Everyone lied.””
His words struck the room.
And nobody denied it.
I looked at Megan.
She lowered her eyes.
I looked at Ethan.
He looked away.
Even Daniel remained silent.
I hated that.
Because somewhere inside their silence was confirmation.
“There’s more,” I said.
Nobody answered.
I turned to Megan.
“You promised me you’d tell me the truth.””
She wiped her tears.
“I’m trying.””
“No. You’re still protecting something.””
Her lips trembled.
Then she nodded.
“You’re right.””
She looked at Emma.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing both of you.””
I waited.
“After your accident, doctors told me your memories might return. But when they did…”
She looked at me.
“You would remember why you were running.””
“Running from what?””
She whispered:
“Your own research.””
The words confused me.
“My research?””
“Yes.””
Ethan finally spoke.
“You weren’t investigating the company from the outside.””
I turned.
“What?””
“You worked there.””
My heart sank.
“I don’t.””
“You did.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You created the first memory mapping system.””
My mind flashed.
Computer screens.
Research papers.
Equations.
My handwriting.
I grabbed the table.
“No.””
Daniel continued.
“You realized they wanted to use it for manipulation.””
“And I stopped them.””
“Yes.””
“Then why don’t I remember?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Dr. Harris answered.
“Because you asked me to erase you.””
The room froze.
My head snapped toward him.
“What?””
“You came to me.””
“No.””
“You knew what they would do if they caught you.””
“That’s impossible.””
He shook his head.
“You recorded a message because you knew you would forget.””
My breathing became uneven.
The recorder.
My voice.
“Do not trust anyone.””
Dr. Harris looked at me.
“You weren’t trying to escape your memories.””
He paused.
“You were trying to hide them.””
A horrible realization formed.
“From who?””
He looked around the room.
Then at the broken front door.
“The people outside.””
Everyone became tense.
Dr. Harris continued.
“They are not here for Emma.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Then why?””
His answer came quietly.
“They’re here for you.””
Before I could respond, the power returned.
The lights flickered.
Then the television turned on by itself.
Static filled the screen.
Everyone stared.
A video appeared.
It showed me.
Older footage.
Eleven years ago.
I was sitting in a laboratory.
My face looked exhausted.
My voice was calm.
“If you’re watching this, something went wrong.””
Megan covered her mouth.
The video continued.
“I know you’ll want answers.””
I watched myself on the screen.
“I know you’ll want to blame everyone.””
My younger self looked directly into the camera.
“But there’s one thing you need to remember.””
The room became colder.
The recording paused.
Then my younger voice said:
“The person who caused all of this…”
A long silence.
Then:
“Was me.””
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
I turned slowly.
“Is that true?””
Megan looked like she was about to break.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel looked away.
Ethan closed his eyes.
And Dr. Harris said the words that destroyed everything.
“You created the first version of the technology.””
He stepped closer.
“But someone else perfected it.””
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“Your brother.””
I felt the world tilt.
“My brother?””
I didn’t have a brother.
I knew that.
I had always known that.
Then Emma whispered:
“Daddy…”
I looked at her.
She was staring at the photograph from earlier.
The old family photo.
The one showing me, Megan, Emma…
and another man.
The man beside us.
The man I thought I had never seen.
Emma pointed at him.
“He said he was coming back.””
My voice shook.
“Who?””
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“The man in the wall.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“The man in the wall?””
Emma nodded.
“He told me to wait.””
May you like
Then she whispered:
“He said he was your brother.””
