Chapter 11: The Memory Inside the Wall

Glass covered the floor.

The sound of alarms filled the neighborhood.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then instinct took over.

Ethan grabbed Lily.

Megan grabbed Emma.

Daniel rushed toward the back door.

Lucas looked at me.

“Ryan, we need to go.””

I didn’t move.

“Not until I understand.””

His expression tightened.

“There’s no time.””

“There’s never time.””

The words surprised him.

But they were true.

For eleven years, everyone had decided when I was ready.

When I could know.

When I could remember.

Not anymore.

I pointed toward the broken window.

“They’re here because of me.””

Lucas nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me why.””

He hesitated.

That hesitation made me angry.

“Tell me.””

Lucas looked at Dr. Harris.

Then back at me.

“You found the original research.””

“What original research?””

“The part everyone wanted buried.””

He walked toward the hidden passage behind Lily’s closet.

The same dark space where Emma had lived.

“The wall.””

I stared.

“What about it?””

Lucas opened the panel wider.

Behind it was more than a hiding place.

There were shelves.

Old files.

A small monitor.

Photographs.

My entire body went cold.

“You built this?””

Lucas nodded.

“You hid the evidence here.””

I stepped inside.

The air smelled like dust and old paper.

My fingers touched a folder.

My name was written on it.

RYAN CARTER.

I opened it.

Inside were pages of research.

My handwriting.

My notes.

My signatures.

I felt sick.

“I don’t remember writing these.””

Lucas stood behind me.

“You will.””

I looked at him.

“How?””

He pointed to a small device attached to the wall.

My heart stopped.

“What is that?””

“A memory trigger.””

Dr. Harris immediately spoke.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

For the first time, he sounded afraid.

“You cannot use that.””

Lucas smiled.

“Why?””

Dr. Harris didn’t answer.

“Because you know what happens if he remembers.””

Silence.

I looked between them.

“What happens?””

Dr. Harris stepped forward.

“Ryan, don’t.””

“Answer me.””

He looked defeated.

“The procedure didn’t remove your memories.””

I already knew that.

“But it also didn’t just hide them.””

My chest tightened.

“What else?””

Dr. Harris whispered:

“It protected you from something.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Lucas answered.

“The truth about yourself.””

The words made no sense.

“I know who I am.””

Lucas looked at the device.

“No, you know who you became.””

A loud crash came from downstairs.

They were inside.

Time was running out.

Lucas activated the monitor.

A video appeared.

It showed me.

Eleven years younger.

Sitting in this exact hidden room.

Talking to the camera.

My younger self looked exhausted.

“If you’re seeing this…”

I held my breath.

“…then they failed.””

My younger self looked directly into the camera.

“Ryan, listen carefully.””

The video flickered.

“I don’t know if I’ll remember this.””

A pause.

“But I know one thing.””

My younger face looked terrified.

“The version of me that wakes up…”

Everyone watched.

“He won’t be safe.””

The video stopped.

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Lucas didn’t answer.

Then footsteps echoed from the hallway.

Someone was approaching.

A familiar voice called out.

“Ryan.””

My blood froze.

Dr. Harris looked toward the door.

“No.””

The voice came again.

“Ryan, come out.””

I knew that voice.

Because I had heard it before.

On the phone.

In the hospital.

In my memories.

Dr. Samuel Harris whispered:

“He found us.””

The door opened.

May you like

And the man standing there wasn’t a stranger.

It was another version of me.
