Chapter 1: The Secret Behind the Closet
“Daddy, my secret friend is hungry again.””
Those were the words my four-year-old daughter whispered to me three weeks before I discovered the little girl living inside my wall.
I laughed at first.
I was standing in our kitchen, trying to make pancakes while my daughter, Lily, sat on the counter swinging her tiny legs. She had chocolate smeared across her cheek and a serious expression that made her look much older than four.
“Your secret friend?”” I asked, flipping a pancake.
“Does your secret friend have a name?””
Lily nodded.
“She says her name is Emma.””
I smiled.
“And where does Emma live?””
Lily pointed toward the hallway.
Behind her closet.
I expected her to giggle.
She didn’t.
“She doesn’t like the dark,” Lily said quietly.
“She gets cold.””
A strange chill moved through me, but I pushed it away.
Kids invented imaginary friends all the time. That was what I told myself.
I was Ryan Carter. Thirty-four years old. Husband to Megan.
Father to Lily. I had a normal life in a quiet neighborhood where nothing exciting ever happened.
At least, that was what I believed.
The first strange noise came five days later.
It happened around midnight.
A soft scratching sound woke me.
At first, I thought it was a mouse.
I opened my eyes and stared into the darkness of our bedroom. Megan was sleeping beside me, her back turned toward me. The room was silent except for the sound of rain tapping against the window.
Then I heard it again.
Scratch.
Scratch.
Scratch.
I sat up.
The sound was coming from the wall behind our bed.
I turned on the lamp and pressed my ear against the paint.
Nothing.
I shook my head and laughed quietly.
“Getting paranoid,” I whispered.
The next morning, I mentioned it while Megan was pouring coffee.
“Probably pipes,” she said quickly.
Too quickly.
I looked at her.
“What?””
She avoided my eyes.
“Old houses make noises, Ryan.””
Our house wasn’t that old.
It was built fifteen years ago.
I noticed things after that.
Little things.
Megan started closing Lily’s bedroom door more often.
She stopped letting Lily play alone upstairs.
And whenever Lily mentioned Emma, my wife became strangely quiet.
One evening, I walked past Lily’s room and heard her talking.
I stopped outside the door.
“No, Emma,” Lily whispered.
“You can’t come out yet.””
My stomach tightened.
I opened the door.
Lily was sitting on the floor with a piece of bread in her hand.
“Who are you talking to?””
She froze.
Then she smiled.
“Emma.””
I looked around the room.
There was nobody there.
“Sweetheart,” I said gently, kneeling beside her.
“Emma isn’t real.””
Lily’s expression changed.
“She is.””
Her voice was so certain that it bothered me.
“She says you don’t remember her.””
A strange feeling crawled up my spine.
“What does that mean?””
But Lily just looked toward her closet.
“She says Mommy told her to wait.””
That night, Megan and I argued for the first time in months.
“What is going on?”” I asked.
She stood at the bathroom sink, removing her earrings.
“What are you talking about?””
“Lily keeps talking about a girl named Emma. She says you know her.””
Megan went still.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
“You’re imagining things,” she said.
“No, I’m not.””
“Ryan, she’s four.””
I stepped closer.
“Then why did you look scared when I mentioned her?””
Her face hardened.
“I didn’t.””
“You did.””
She grabbed her toothbrush and looked away.
“Please don’t turn this into something it isn’t.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it sounded less like a wife calming her husband down…
and more like someone trying to keep a secret buried.
The next morning, I found crumbs near Lily’s closet.
At first, I thought she had dropped food.
Then I saw the small gap behind the wooden panel.
A gap that wasn’t supposed to be there.
I crouched down.
The panel had been slightly pushed outward.
My fingers touched the edge.
The wood moved.
My heart began beating faster.
Behind it was darkness.
A small space.
A hidden space.
I grabbed my phone and turned on the flashlight.
The beam disappeared into the wall.
Then I heard something.
Breathing.
Someone was inside.
I pulled back so fast I hit the floor.
A tiny voice came from the darkness.
“Lily?””
My blood turned cold.
I stood slowly.
“Who’s there?””
Silence.
Then the voice whispered:
“Is Daddy angry?””
My hand shook as I reached toward the panel.
And before I could open it completely…
May you like
I heard my wife scream from behind me.
“Don’t touch her, Ryan!””
