Chapter 6: The Memory That Was Stolen

Nobody spoke.

Not for several seconds.

The sentence repeated in my mind.

You were the one they were afraid of.

I looked at Emma.

A six-year-old child who had spent years hidden behind a wall.

A child who knew pieces of my life better than I did.

“What does that mean?””

She looked scared.

“I don’t know.””

“Emma.””

She hugged herself.

“I only remember pieces.””

“Tell me.””

Megan immediately shook her head.

“Ryan, don’t force her.””

But I couldn’t stop.

Not anymore.

My entire life had been built on missing pieces.

I needed the truth.

Emma looked at Daniel.

“Daddy was angry.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“He found something.””

The man in the suit became tense.

“Enough.””

I looked at him.

“Shut up.””

It was the first time I had spoken to him without fear.

And I realized something.

I was done being confused.

I was done being controlled.

The man stared at me.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

“Maybe.””

I stood slowly.

“But I know you’re scared.””

That made him pause.

Because I was right.

He was.

Megan looked at me differently.

Like she was seeing the old Ryan returning.

Not the man who forgot.

The man who fought.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Eleven years ago, you discovered the company was running illegal experiments.””

“Experiments?””

“Memory research.””

The room went cold.

I stared at him.

“Memory?””

Daniel nodded.

“They were trying to erase trauma.””

The man in the suit interrupted.

“And you ruined everything.””

Daniel looked at him.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Ryan ruined everything because he proved it worked.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“You were their test subject.””

The words barely made sense.

“I wasn’t.””

“You were.””

Megan started crying.

“I found out after the accident.””

I turned to her.

“What?””

She wiped her face.

“The crash damaged your brain. But when you woke up…”

She struggled to continue.

“You didn’t remember Emma.””

A painful silence followed.

“You didn’t remember me.””

Her voice broke.

“And the doctors found something impossible.””

“What?””

“You could still learn.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel answered.

“The treatment didn’t erase your memories.””

He looked directly at me.

“It buried them.””

My hands went numb.

“So someone did this to me.””

The man in the suit smiled slightly.

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Because suddenly, I remembered.

Not everything.

But enough.

A face.

A voice.

A person I trusted.

Someone who had been there before the accident.

Someone who had held my hand when I was injured.

Someone who had told me everything would be okay.

My breath caught.

“No.””

Megan looked at me.

“What?””

I whispered the name.

“Dr. Harris.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You remember.””

Dr. Harris.

My old mentor.

The man who introduced me to the research company.

The man who visited me in the hospital.

The man who told me my memories were gone.

The man who convinced me to start over.

The man who had been helping me forget.

The stranger in the suit smiled.

“Good.””

I stared at him.

“Where is he?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The sound came from my pocket.

I slowly pulled it out.

Unknown number.

I answered.

At first, there was only silence.

Then a familiar voice.

An old voice.

Calm.

Almost kind.

“Ryan.””

My blood ran cold.

“Dr. Harris?””

Megan covered her mouth.

Daniel stepped back.

The voice continued.

“I’m glad you’re finally awake.””

I gripped the phone.

“Where are you?””

A quiet laugh.

“Closer than you think.””

The lights flickered.

Everyone looked around.

Then the voice whispered:

“Ryan, look behind you.””

I turned slowly.

May you like

And standing at the entrance of the room…

was the man I thought I would never see again.
