Chapter 4: The Man Waiting in the Dark

I ran.

I didn’t think.

I didn’t ask questions.

The second I heard Lily scream, every fear, every impossible truth, every broken memory disappeared.

There was only one thought in my mind.

My daughter was in danger.

I rushed down the stairs with Ethan right behind me. The house was completely dark except for the faint glow of lightning flashing through the windows.

“Lily!”” I shouted.

No answer.

“Lily!””

Then I heard crying.

From the living room.

I moved faster.

When I reached the doorway, I stopped.

Lily was standing behind the couch, clutching her stuffed rabbit.

And beside the front door stood a man.

He wasn’t hiding.

He wasn’t running.

He was just waiting.

He was wearing a dark coat, his hands resting calmly at his sides.

The strangest part was his expression.

He looked relieved.

Like he had finally found something he had been searching for.

“Ryan,” he said.

My stomach dropped.

I had never met him.

But he knew my name.

“Who are you?””

The man smiled slightly.

“Still asking that question.””

I stepped in front of Lily.

“Stay away from my family.””

The man tilted his head.

“Your family?””

He looked around the room.

Then his eyes landed on Ethan.

“You brought him back.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“You need to leave.””

The stranger laughed softly.

“You always did think you could protect them.””

I looked between them.

“You know each other.””

Nobody answered.

The stranger walked closer.

I raised my voice.

“Don’t move.””

He stopped.

For a moment, the only sound was the rain outside.

Then he reached into his pocket.

Megan screamed.

“Ryan, don’t let him pull anything out!””

The man slowly removed a small object.

Not a weapon.

A key.

An old brass key.

He held it up.

“You remember this?””

I stared at it.

And then something happened.

A memory.

Not a thought.

Not imagination.

A real memory.

A little girl laughing.

A wooden box.

My hand giving this exact key to someone.

My chest tightened.

I stumbled backward.

The stranger noticed.

“You felt it.””

I grabbed the edge of the table.

“What did you do to me?””

He looked almost disappointed.

“I didn’t do anything.””

“Then who are you?””

His face became serious.

“My name is Daniel.””

The name meant nothing.

But the way Ethan reacted told me everything.

Ethan’s expression changed.

Fear.

Pure fear.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

Megan moved closer to Lily.

“Ryan, we need to get out.””

Daniel smiled.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

He pointed toward me.

“The accident wasn’t the beginning.””

The room became silent.

“It was the ending.””

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Your memory wasn’t damaged by the crash.””

Ethan clenched his fists.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Daniel ignored him.

“Someone made sure you forgot.””

My eyes moved toward Megan.

She looked away.

A terrible thought entered my mind.

“Megan?””

Her face collapsed.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

Those words hurt more than anything.

“You knew?””

“I knew you were going to die if you remembered.””

Daniel laughed.

“She always says that.””

Megan turned toward him.

“Shut up.””

“You chose for him.””

“I saved him.””

“You stole his life.””

The words hung in the air.

Lily started crying.

I looked down at her.

“Sweetheart, come here.””

She ran into my arms immediately.

Holding her felt familiar.

Too familiar.

Like my body remembered something my mind couldn’t.

Daniel watched us.

“You see?””

He whispered.

“Even after everything, he still knows how to be her father.””

I tightened my grip on Lily.

“What do you want?””

Daniel looked at Emma standing on the stairs.

My breath stopped.

I hadn’t noticed she had come down.

She was staring at Daniel.

And she looked terrified.

Daniel’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked less powerful.

More human.

“Emma.””

The little girl stepped back.

“No.””

My eyes widened.

She knew him.

“Emma?””

She hid behind Ethan.

Daniel looked hurt.

“I came here to take you home.””

“I don’t have a home with you.””

The room froze.

Megan whispered:

“What did you say?””

Emma looked at her.

“You told me never to tell him.””

My heart sank.

“Tell me what?””

Emma looked at me.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Daddy…”

She pointed at Daniel.

“He was there when Mommy made you forget.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel closed his eyes.

And for the first time…

he looked guilty.

Then the police sirens appeared in the distance.

Daniel turned toward the window.

His face changed.

Fear.

Not of us.

Of someone else.

“They’re coming too late.””

I grabbed Lily tighter.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“The people who were behind all of this.””

The front door suddenly shook.

Someone was outside.

Not knocking.

Breaking in.

May you like

Daniel whispered:

“They found us.””
