Chapter 3: The Man From My Forgotten Life

I couldn’t speak.

The photograph shook between my fingers.

The man standing in front of me slowly stepped out of the hidden passage.

He was older than me.

Maybe by ten years.

His clothes were dirty, and his face looked exhausted, but there was something familiar about him.

Something impossible.

Megan stood immediately.

“Ethan.””

The stranger looked at her.

“You still remember my name.””

My entire body went cold.

“You know him?””

Megan didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I looked between them.

“You know him?””

Ethan gave a bitter laugh.

“She knows me better than anyone.””

“Who are you?””

He stared at me.

Then he looked at Emma.

“I’m the reason she survived.””

Emma ran toward him.

He caught her immediately.

“Daddy Ethan,” she whispered.

The words made my head spin.

There were too many questions.

Too many pieces that didn’t fit.

I stepped forward.

“Someone better start explaining.””

Ethan looked at me.

“You really lost everything.””

“What does that mean?””

He handed the photograph back to me.

“Look closer.””

I looked again.

The picture showed me holding a baby.

Megan stood beside me.

Ethan stood next to her.

But there was something written on the back.

A date.

A date from eleven years ago.

And a name.

Emma Carter.

My knees almost gave out.

“No.””

Ethan watched my reaction.

“You were happy.””

I looked at Megan.

“You told me Lily was our first child.””

Megan closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“Why?””

She began crying.

“Because I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

Ethan answered.

“Of what would happen if you remembered.””

I turned toward him.

“What are you talking about?””

He looked around the bedroom.

At the walls.

At the hidden passage.

“This house wasn’t supposed to be your home.””

The words sounded insane.

But somehow, I believed him.

Not because they made sense.

Because my own memories were starting to feel wrong.

Small flashes appeared.

A hospital room.

A newborn baby crying.

Megan’s hand in mine.

A voice saying my name.

Then darkness.

I grabbed my head.

A sharp pain exploded behind my eyes.

Megan rushed toward me.

“Ryan.””

I pushed her away.

“Don’t.””

The hurt on her face almost broke me.

But I couldn’t stop.

“How many lies?””

She whispered:

“Too many.””

Ethan sat Emma down carefully.

“She deserves the truth.””

Megan looked terrified.

“No.””

“Yes,” Ethan said.

“She has spent six years waiting for him to remember.””

I looked at Emma.

Six years.

The number felt strange.

I was thirty-four.

Lily was four.

Emma was six.

The math was impossible.

Unless…

Unless my entire life had a missing piece.

“Tell me everything.””

Megan sat on the edge of the bed.

Her hands were shaking.

“Eleven years ago, you and I weren’t married.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“We were together, but we were young. You were working two jobs. I was finishing school.””

She looked at Emma.

“When Emma was born, you were the happiest I had ever seen you.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“You promised you would protect her.””

I swallowed.

“Then what happened?””

Megan looked at Ethan.

“He knows.””

Ethan looked away.

“I was your best friend.””

The words landed hard.

“You?””

He nodded.

“We grew up together.””

I searched his face.

Nothing.

No memory.

No recognition.

“You were in the accident too.””

My stomach tightened.

Ethan nodded.

“The night everything changed.””

Rain hit the windows harder.

The same sound that had followed this nightmare from the beginning.

“What accident?”” I asked.

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“The one where you should have died.””

I waited.

“And?””

He looked directly at me.

“You didn’t just lose your memory, Ryan.””

The room went silent.

“You lost eleven years.””

I felt dizzy.

“That’s impossible.””

“No,” Ethan said quietly.

“What’s impossible is that you woke up believing you had lived a different life.””

Megan covered her face.

“I thought it was better.””

“Better?”” I shouted.

“You erased his daughter.””

“I saved him!””

Her scream shocked the room.

“I watched him wake up and not know me. Not know Emma. Not know the life we had. The doctors said the memories might never come back.””

My anger weakened.

Only slightly.

“So you created a new life?””

She nodded.

“I changed everything.””

“Why?””

Her voice became barely a whisper.

“Because someone was trying to take Emma.””

A silence followed.

Then Ethan looked toward the hidden passage.

“He found us again.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Instead, he reached into his jacket and pulled out another photograph.

This one was newer.

Only a few days old.

It showed my house.

My family.

Taken from outside our window.

And written across the bottom were five words:

*I KNOW YOU REMEMBER NOW.*

Before anyone could speak…

the lights in the house suddenly went out.

And from somewhere downstairs…

May you like

Lily screamed.

“Daddy! Someone is here!””
