Chapter 18: The Choice of One Ryan

The room was silent.

Not peaceful.

Not safe.

Just silent.

Everyone waited for me to speak.

But I didn’t know where to begin.

Because I remembered everything.

Every birthday.

Every betrayal.

Every moment lost.

Every version of myself.

I remembered being a child with Lucas.

I remembered creating the technology.

I remembered begging Dr. Harris to erase me.

I remembered waking up as someone new.

And I remembered the truth.

The other Ryan stepped closer.

“What did you see?””

I looked at him.

“You want to know?””

He nodded.

I took a breath.

“You were never an accident.””

His expression changed.

“What?””

“You were created because I knew I might fail.””

He stared.

“I created you.””

The room reacted.

Megan covered her mouth.

Lucas closed his eyes.

The other Ryan looked like I had punched him.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

I looked at him.

“Because I needed someone to survive if I couldn’t.””

His anger cracked.

“You made me.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you take my life?””

The question hurt.

Because I had no answer that could fix it.

“I didn’t know.””

His voice broke.

“That’s the worst part.””

He stepped back.

“I spent years believing someone stole my life.””

He looked at me.

“But you didn’t even know I existed.””

I lowered my eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

He laughed softly.

“I don’t know if I hate you or feel sorry for you.””

“I feel the same.””

For the first time, he smiled.

A small, painful smile.

Then the alarms returned.

The attackers were closer.

The older man looked toward the entrance.

“They’re almost here.””

I stood.

The room felt different.

Because I felt different.

Not stronger.

Not smarter.

Whole.

“What do they want?””

Dr. Harris answered.

“They want the source code.””

I looked at him.

“The source code is me.””

He nodded.

“They can rebuild the process.””

“And Emma?””

Everyone went quiet.

I already knew.

“She’s the next step.””

Lucas looked at me.

“What will you do?””

I looked at the machine.

Then at Emma.

Then at the files.

The research.

The technology that had destroyed generations of our family.

I knew what I had to do.

But it meant losing something.

Maybe everything.

I walked toward the computer.

The other Ryan followed.

“What are you doing?””

“Ending this.””

He looked at the screen.

“If you destroy it, you destroy us.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

He stared.

“You’re willing to erase yourself?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I smiled sadly.

“I’m willing to stop letting other people decide who I am.””

I began typing.

My hands moved naturally.

Because this was something I had done before.

The code appeared.

Years of research.

Years of pain.

Years of suffering.

All leading to one final command.

Lucas looked over my shoulder.

“What is that?””

I answered:

“The original failsafe.””

Dr. Harris stepped forward.

“You wrote that?””

“Yes.””

“What does it do?””

I looked at him.

“It destroys the ability to copy consciousness.””

The room went silent.

“But it keeps memories.””

Megan looked confused.

“Why?””

I turned.

“Because memories belong to people.””

A pause.

“Not companies.””

The door exploded.

The attackers entered.

But nobody moved.

Because the countdown had already started.

Ten seconds.

The leader shouted:

“Stop!””

I kept typing.

Nine.

Eight.

The other Ryan grabbed a weapon from the floor.

Seven.

“You’re really doing this.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

Six.

He shook his head.

“You’re insane.””

I smiled.

“Probably.””

Five.

Lucas stood beside me.

Four.

Megan held both girls.

Three.

Dr. Harris looked at the countdown.

Two.

The leader screamed.

“One.””

I pressed enter.

The entire room went white.

For a moment, there was nothing.

No sound.

No pain.

No fear.

Then I opened my eyes.

I was standing in a field.

A quiet field.

No machines.

No walls.

No secrets.

Someone stood beside me.

The other Ryan.

He looked around.

“Is this real?””

I smiled.

“I don’t know.””

He laughed.

“Finally.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“For once, neither of us knows.””

And somehow…

that felt like freedom.

Then a voice called my name.

“Daddy!””

I turned.

Lily and Emma were running toward us.

Behind them stood Megan.

Smiling.

Alive.

The other Ryan looked at me.

“What happens now?””

I watched my family.

Our family.

And answered:

“Now…”

May you like

I smiled.

“…we finally get to live.””
