Chapter 15: The Woman Who Started Everything

The speaker crackled.

Everyone stared upward.

Nobody breathed.

Then the voice returned.

“Lucas, you always were the emotional one.””

My brother’s face went white.

“Mara.””

I looked at him.

“You know her?””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The fear in his eyes said enough.

The other Ryan stepped closer.

“Who is she?””

Lucas whispered:

“Our mother.””

The tunnel went silent.

My entire body went cold.

Our mother.

A woman I didn’t remember.

A woman who was apparently alive.

The speaker clicked.

“You’re all looking for someone to blame.””

The voice sounded calm.

Almost kind.

“That’s what humans do when they don’t understand.””

Lucas stepped toward the speaker.

“Where are you?””

A soft laugh.

“Still trying to save everyone.””

My hands tightened.

“Mara.””

Everyone looked at me.

I didn’t know why I said her name.

But somehow…

I knew it.

A memory surfaced.

A woman singing.

A hand holding mine.

A promise.

“I’ll protect you.””

I covered my mouth.

Dr. Harris looked at me.

“You remember.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

But I did.

Not everything.

Pieces.

A childhood.

A laboratory.

A woman crying over me.

Mara’s voice continued.

“Ryan, you finally understand.””

I stared at the speaker.

“What did you do to us?””

Silence.

Then:

“I gave you a chance.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

“You think I wanted this?””

The emotion in her voice surprised me.

“You think I wanted to watch my sons become strangers?””

Lucas stepped forward.

“You chose them over us.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I chose survival.””

The tunnel lights flickered.

Then a screen turned on.

A video appeared.

A woman.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

Mara Carter.

She looked directly at the camera.

“If you are watching this, the experiment succeeded.””

I felt sick.

She continued.

“Ryan and Lucas are the first human subjects to survive complete memory reconstruction.””

The video showed children.

Two boys.

Us.

“Most subjects rejected the procedure.””

She paused.

“But my sons adapted.””

Lucas looked horrified.

“I was a child.””

Mara continued.

“I did what I had to do.””

The other Ryan stepped back.

“You experimented on your own children.””

The speaker went silent.

Then Mara answered:

“Yes.””

Nobody expected honesty.

She continued.

“Because I knew what was coming.””

I frowned.

“What was coming?””

The screen changed.

Documents appeared.

Names.

Organizations.

Governments.

Companies.

People.

Powerful people.

Mara spoke.

“The world was approaching a war over memory technology.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who controls memory controls everything.””

The screen showed people losing identities.

False memories.

Manipulation.

“I created a way to preserve humanity.””

Lucas shook his head.

“You destroyed ours.””

Mara looked directly at him through the screen.

“I saved yours.””

The other Ryan laughed.

“She really believes that.””

Then the screen changed again.

A final file appeared.

A name.

A project.

PROJECT DAWN.

My blood went cold.

Because I recognized it.

Not from memory.

From instinct.

“What is that?””

Dr. Harris whispered:

“The final stage.””

I looked at him.

“What final stage?””

He looked terrified.

Mara answered.

“You.””

The room became silent.

“Ryan Carter was never meant to be a person.””

My heart stopped.

“He was meant to be a blueprint.””

I stared at the screen.

“What?””

“You are the first human whose memories can be transferred without losing identity.””

The words felt impossible.

“You are the template.””

Lucas stepped back.

“No.””

Mara continued.

“And Emma…”

Everyone looked at my daughter.

“…is the future.””

My blood ran cold.

Megan grabbed Emma.

“No.””

The speaker clicked.

Then Mara said the words that changed everything.

“The reason everyone has been fighting over her…”

A pause.

“Is because she is the first naturally occurring version.””

The tunnel lights went dark.

And in the silence, a new sound appeared.

A heartbeat.

Coming from behind the wall.

A hidden room.

A room none of us knew existed.

Lucas whispered:

“Impossible.””

I looked at the wall.

Then at him.

“What?””

His face turned pale.

“Because there’s only one person who knows that room exists.””

The wall slowly opened.

And a voice from inside whispered:

“Ryan…”

May you like

A voice I recognized.

My own.
