Chapter 14: Two Fathers, One Daughter
The words destroyed whatever certainty I had left.
I didn’t know who I was.
I didn’t know what was real.
I didn’t know whether my love for Lily was a memory…
or something I had created.
But when she ran toward me crying, I didn’t question it.
I caught her.
I held her.
And nothing else mattered.
“Daddy,” she whispered.
My eyes closed.
Because that word felt real.
More real than anything.
The other Ryan watched us.
His expression was impossible to read.
Megan looked between us.
Two versions of the same man.
Two fathers.
Two lives.
One family.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“For what?””
Her voice shook.
“For loving both of you.””
The honesty hurt.
But I understood.
Because how could she not?
One man carried the memories of the past.
The other carried the years they built together.
Neither of us was fake.
Neither of us was whole.
The other Ryan walked away.
“I shouldn’t be here.””
Emma looked at him.
“Why?””
He stopped.
The little girl stared at him.
“You know me.””
He slowly turned.
“Yes.””
“You remember when I was little.””
His face changed.
“I remember everything.””
My chest tightened.
Emma moved closer.
“Then you’re my daddy too.””
Nobody spoke.
The sentence was simple.
But it broke everyone.
The other Ryan looked away.
“I don’t deserve that.””
Emma frowned.
“Why?””
Because she was a child.
She didn’t understand the impossible adult pain surrounding her.
The other Ryan wiped his face.
“Because I wasn’t there.””
Emma looked confused.
“But you wanted to be.””
He looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Then you’re my daddy.””
I looked down.
Because somehow, the child who had been trapped behind a wall understood something we didn’t.
Love wasn’t stored in memories.
It was stored in choices.
A crash shook the house.
The attackers were getting closer.
Lucas moved toward the back passage.
“We need to go.””
This time, everyone followed.
Even the other Ryan.
As we moved through the hidden tunnels beneath the house, I noticed something.
Pictures covered the walls.
Hundreds of them.
My life.
Megan.
Emma.
Lily.
Lucas.
Daniel.
Events I remembered.
Events I didn’t.
I stopped at one picture.
It showed me holding baby Lily.
But beside me stood the other Ryan.
Both of us smiling.
“What is this?””
Megan stopped.
She looked at the picture.
“That was before.””
“Before what?””
She hesitated.
“Before we knew there would be two of you.””
I turned.
“What?””
She looked exhausted.
“After the procedure, the scientists realized the copies were separating.””
Lucas continued.
“One kept emotional memory.””
“The other kept factual memory.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
The other Ryan answered.
“It means you kept the ability to love.””
He looked at me.
“And I kept the ability to remember.””
The words hit me.
“You remember everything?””
He nodded.
“Every birthday.””
A pause.
“Every first step.””
Another pause.
“Every night I missed.””
I looked at Lily.
And guilt crushed me.
Because he had lost those moments.
But I had lived them.
Then he looked at me.
“And you remember none of the pain.””
I froze.
“What?””
His face hardened.
“You got the easy version.””
The tunnel became silent.
“Your memories were rebuilt from the good moments.””
I shook my head.
“That’s not true.””
“It is.””
He stepped closer.
“You don’t remember losing Emma.””
My heart stopped.
“You don’t remember the night they took her.””
My breathing changed.
“You don’t remember begging them to stop.””
The words felt like knives.
Because somewhere deep inside…
I did.
A flash.
A scream.
A door closing.
Emma crying.
My voice.
“Run.””
I grabbed the wall.
The other Ryan looked at me.
“You’re starting to remember.””
Then a voice came through the tunnel speakers.
A voice none of us expected.
A voice that made Lucas stop walking.
A woman’s voice.
“Ryan.””
Everyone froze.
Lucas whispered:
“No.””
The voice continued.
“You were never the experiment.””
May you like
A pause.
“You were the cure.””
