Chapter 6: The Truth My Husband Took to His Grave

I dropped the phone.

Nobody spoke.

The sound of it hitting the stone patio was louder than it should have been.

Harrison stared at me.

"Mom?""

I couldn't answer.

My entire life had just shifted.

My husband, Robert, had been gone for twelve years.

I had mourned him.

I had kept his pictures.

I had slept beside an empty space in our bed for years.

And now someone was telling me I never knew him.

Sloan looked strangely calm.

Too calm.

That bothered me.

"You knew," I said.

Her eyes moved toward me.

"What?""

"You knew something about Robert.""

She didn't answer.

Harrison noticed too.

"Sloan.""

She looked at him.

"I didn't know everything.""

"But you knew something.""

She looked away.

That was enough.

I picked up my phone.

The call had ended.

But a voicemail remained.

I pressed play.

A man's voice filled the patio.

"Marianne, my name is Victor Hale. Robert asked me to contact you if the truth ever came out.""

My heart pounded.

"Robert knew?""

The recording continued.

"He spent years trying to fix what happened. Sloan was not the only person involved.""

Harrison looked at me.

"Not the only person?""

The recording stopped.

There was another message.

A photo attachment.

I opened it.

It was a picture of a document.

A legal agreement.

At the bottom was Robert's signature.

And Sloan's father's signature.

The date was from twenty-three years ago.

Before Sloan married Harrison.

I zoomed in.

The agreement was clear.

Money had exchanged hands.

A large amount of money.

The purpose?

Silencing Rachel Collins.

My hands went numb.

"Sloan's family paid him.""

Everyone stared.

Harrison took the phone.

"Why?""

Sloan suddenly broke.

Not crying.

Not pretending.

Breaking.

"Because your father was going to ruin everything.""

Harrison looked at her.

"What did you do?""

She shook her head.

"I didn't plan any of this.""

Ava stepped forward.

"But you continued it.""

Sloan looked at her.

"I was young.""

Ava laughed sadly.

"You were thirty-two.""

Nobody defended Sloan.

Not even Harrison.

She sat down slowly.

"I thought if Rachel disappeared, everything would become simpler.""

The words hung in the air.

Harrison looked disgusted.

"You thought?""

Sloan covered her face.

"I didn't know she would leave forever.""

Daniel's voice became cold.

"You knew exactly what you were doing.""

Sloan looked at him.

"You don't know what it was like.""

"What?""

"Being second choice.""

Everyone went quiet.

Sloan looked at Harrison.

"I loved you.""

Harrison shook his head.

"No. You loved winning.""

That sentence destroyed her.

Because it was true.

For years, Sloan had treated life like a competition.

Against me.

Against Rachel.

Against anyone who threatened her place.

I looked at Ava.

The young woman who had lost twenty-three years with her father.

The daughter who should have grown up knowing her family.

And I realized something.

Sloan hadn't just stolen from Harrison.

She had stolen from all of us.

Ava walked toward me.

"I'm sorry your birthday turned into this.""

I looked at her.

Then at the ruined cake still sitting near the patio.

The candles were gone.

The frosting was mixed with dirt.

A birthday destroyed by cruelty.

But somehow, from that destruction, the truth had finally appeared.

I touched Ava's hand.

"You didn't ruin anything.""

She looked at me.

"You found what was already broken.""

Harrison stood silently.

Then he turned toward Sloan.

"I need time.""

She looked terrified.

"Harrison.""

"No.""

His voice was calm.

"All my life, I believed I was protecting my family.""

He looked at Ava.

"But I was protecting a lie.""

Sloan stood.

"Where will I go?""

Nobody answered.

Then the front gate opened.

A woman stood there holding a folder.

She looked directly at Sloan.

"Sloan Mercer?""

Sloan froze.

"Who are you?""

The woman walked forward.

"My name is Claire Bennett.""

She handed Harrison the folder.

"I worked with Rachel Collins before she died.""

Ava stepped closer.

"Why are you here?""

Claire looked at Sloan.

"Because Rachel left one final message.""

She opened the folder.

"And she specifically said it should only be revealed when Sloan's secret was exposed.""

Harrison opened the folder.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at Sloan.

And whispered:

"Mom was right.""

I frowned.

"Who is Mom?""

Harrison slowly handed me the paper.

At the top were four words.

THE REAL FATHER OF AVA.

May you like

And beneath it was a name.

A name that none of us expected.
