Chapter 13: The Brother Who Came Home

For twelve years, I had believed my family was complete.

A husband.

A son.

A home filled with ordinary memories.

And now, standing in an abandoned hospital room, I was looking at a man who carried my son's face.

A stranger who was not a stranger.

The room felt too small.

Nobody moved.

Nobody knew what to say.

The man looked at Harrison first.

Then at Ava.

Then finally at me.

His eyes softened.

"I'm sorry.""

My voice barely worked.

"Who are you?""

He swallowed.

"My name is Ethan.""

The name meant nothing.

But his face did.

Harrison stepped forward.

"You said you're my brother.""

Ethan nodded.

"Yes.""

"How?""

Ethan looked down.

"Because Robert told me.""

The mention of my husband's name changed everything.

Harrison's expression hardened.

"Where is the proof?""

Ethan reached into his coat and pulled out a worn envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

The same photograph I had seen earlier.

Two newborn babies.

But this time, there was something written on the back.

Two names.

Harrison.

Ethan.

My knees almost gave out.

I grabbed the edge of the table.

"No.""

Ethan looked at me.

"I know this is hard.""

"Hard?""

My voice cracked.

"I spent my entire life believing I had one child.""

Ethan lowered his eyes.

"I know.""

"How?""

"Because Robert told me.""

That sentence hurt more than anything.

Robert knew.

He knew I had another son.

He knew there was a child out there.

And he carried that secret to his grave.

Harrison looked furious.

"Why didn't he tell us?""

Ethan looked at him.

"Because he was trying to protect you.""

"Protect me?""

Harrison laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

He pointed around the room.

"My entire life was controlled by people who thought they knew what was best for me.""

Nobody argued.

Because nobody could.

Ethan nodded slowly.

"You're right.""

That surprised Harrison.

"My whole life, people made decisions for us.""

He looked at me.

"Robert included.""

The pain in his voice was unbearable.

I wanted to tell him I understood.

But I didn't.

Because I was beginning to realize I had spent years defending a man who had hidden the biggest truth of my life.

Ava stepped closer to Ethan.

"Do you know anything about my mother?""

Ethan looked at her.

His expression changed.

"Rachel saved my life.""

Ava froze.

"What?""

Ethan sat down.

"I was a newborn. Richard wanted me gone. He believed two children would create too many questions.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"He planned everything.""

Ethan nodded.

"Robert found out.""

"How?"" Harrison asked.

"Because Rachel left evidence.""

Ethan looked at Ava.

"Your mother risked everything to expose him.""

Ava's eyes filled with tears.

"Then why didn't she tell me about you?""

Ethan's expression softened.

"Because she thought I was dead.""

The room went silent.

"What?""

Ethan looked toward the old hospital window.

"Richard arranged for me to disappear. But Robert found me first.""

I felt a chill.

"What did Robert do?""

"He took me away.""

Harrison stared.

"Where?""

Ethan hesitated.

"To a family friend.""

"And Mom?""

Ethan looked at me.

"Robert wanted to tell you.""

I held my breath.

"Then why didn't he?""

"Because Richard threatened him.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Richard was capable of anything.""

Ethan nodded.

"He told Robert that if he exposed the truth, he would destroy Marianne and Harrison.""

I looked at Harrison.

My son was silent.

For once, he wasn't angry.

He was just hurt.

Ethan continued.

"Robert spent years collecting evidence.""

He handed Harrison another envelope.

"He wanted to bring Richard down.""

Harrison opened it.

Inside were documents.

Financial records.

Hospital files.

And one final page.

A confession.

Signed by Richard Mercer.

Harrison read it.

Then his face changed.

"What?""

Ava moved closer.

"What does it say?""

Harrison looked at us.

"It says Richard didn't just hide Ethan.""

He swallowed.

"He planned to use the adoption records to control Robert.""

Daniel frowned.

"How?""

Harrison turned the page.

"Because Richard knew Robert would never abandon his family.""

My heart tightened.

"Then why did he?""

Harrison looked at me.

"He didn't.""

The room became silent.

"He was trying to expose Richard.""

Ava whispered:

"So Robert was protecting everyone.""

I looked at the photograph of my two sons.

All those years.

All those secrets.

And suddenly, Robert's final message made sense.

He wasn't hiding the truth because he didn't love us.

He was hiding it because he was afraid of what would happen if he revealed it.

Then Ethan looked at the door.

His expression changed.

"He's here.""

Everyone turned.

"Who?""

Ethan's face went pale.

"Richard.""

A shadow moved outside the glass.

Then a familiar voice called from the hallway.

"You always were better at hiding than your father.""

Ethan stood.

May you like

And whispered:

"My uncle found us.""
