Chapter 19: The Sister I Never Knew

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't thinking about Robert.

Or Richard.

Or the children I lost and found.

I was thinking about myself.

A woman who looked exactly like me stared back from the faded picture.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Same small scar near the eyebrow that I had gotten as a child after falling from a tree.

It was impossible.

"Mom?""

Harrison's voice pulled me back.

I looked at him.

"I don't know who she is.""

Michael stepped closer.

His face had changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

"You do.""

I turned sharply.

"What?""

Michael looked at the photograph.

"Her name is Claire.""

My breath caught.

Claire.

The same name as the woman who brought Rachel's files to us.

The same woman who claimed to have worked with Rachel.

"No.""

Michael nodded slowly.

"She was your sister.""

I felt the room spin.

"My sister died.""

That was the story I had been told.

My entire childhood.

My parents had one daughter.

Me.

There was never another child.

Michael looked at the letter.

"Your parents changed everything.""

"Why?""

He looked at me with sadness.

"Because Richard wasn't the first person in your family to hide the truth.""

I felt anger rise.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

My voice broke.

"Everyone keeps telling me secrets were necessary. That lies were protection.""

I looked around the room.

"Do you know what secrets do?""

Nobody answered.

"They steal years.""

The room became silent.

Ethan looked at me.

"You deserved the truth.""

I nodded.

"I did.""

Harrison picked up the letter.

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

The handwriting was my mother's.

My mother.

The woman who held me when I was sick.

The woman who told me honesty mattered.

The woman who had lied to me.

"My dear Marianne,

If you are reading this, then the secrets I tried to bury have finally returned.""

I swallowed.

"I was not your only child.""

The words hurt even though I already knew.

"Your sister Claire was born three years before you. When she was young, she discovered that our family was connected to people who valued power more than love.""

I frowned.

"What people?""

Michael answered quietly.

"The Mercer family.""

I looked at him.

"How?""

"Your sister discovered financial crimes connected to Richard's father.""

I stared.

Another generation.

Another family secret.

The pattern stretched back further than I imagined.

The letter continued.

"Claire tried to expose them. When she refused to stay silent, your father made a choice I never forgave.""

I stopped.

My heart raced.

"What choice?""

I kept reading.

"He sent Claire away.""

Ava covered her mouth.

"Just like Ethan.""

Nobody spoke.

The same story.

Different people.

Children separated.

Truth buried.

Families controlled by fear.

But there was one difference.

Claire wasn't dead.

She was alive.

I looked at Michael.

"Where is she?""

He hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

"You know.""

Michael looked away.

"Where is she?""

Before he could answer, the study door opened.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Gray hair.

But the face was unmistakable.

My face.

Everyone froze.

She looked at me.

And tears filled her eyes.

"Marianne.""

My legs almost gave out.

"You.""

She nodded.

"I'm sorry.""

I couldn't move.

Twenty-three years of searching for lost children.

Twenty-three years of believing secrets were things that happened to other people.

And now I was standing in front of the biggest secret of all.

My sister.

Claire stepped inside.

"I wanted to come sooner.""

"Why didn't you?""

Her eyes filled with pain.

"Because I was afraid.""

I laughed quietly.

"Everyone was afraid.""

She looked down.

"I thought staying away would protect you.""

I shook my head.

"That word again.""

She understood.

"I know.""

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she looked at Harrison.

"Ethan.""

She looked at Ava.

"Rachel's daughter.""

Then back at me.

"Your family has been fighting the same battle for decades.""

"What battle?""

Claire's expression hardened.

"The battle against Richard.""

Michael looked at her.

"You knew where he was.""

Claire nodded.

Everyone froze.

Harrison stepped forward.

"You knew?""

"Yes.""

"And you didn't tell us?""

Claire looked at me.

"I was waiting for Marianne to remember.""

I frowned.

"Remember what?""

Claire reached into her bag.

She pulled out an old cassette tape.

Another recording.

"I found this after our mother died.""

My stomach tightened.

"From who?""

Claire looked at me.

"From you.""

I stared.

"What?""

She handed it to me.

"It was recorded when you were twenty-five.""

I looked at the tape.

"I don't understand.""

Claire whispered:

"Your parents didn't just hide me.""

She paused.

"They hid what happened after I came back.""

The room went silent.

"After you came back?""

Claire nodded.

"You found out the truth.""

"What truth?""

She looked at me.

"The reason Richard has spent his entire life controlling your family.""

I pressed the play button.

A younger version of my own voice filled the room.

"If anyone finds this recording, it means I was right to be afraid.""

My blood ran cold.

My younger voice continued.

"Richard Mercer didn't create the secrets.""

A pause.

"He inherited them.""

Everyone listened.

Then my voice said the words that changed everything.

"The person who taught Richard everything was still alive.""

I stopped breathing.

The recording ended.

Harrison looked at me.

"Who?""

Claire answered.

Nobody expected it.

"The founder of everything.""

She looked at the photograph on the desk.

"The person who started the Mercer empire.""

I whispered:

"Who?""

Claire looked toward the window.

May you like

And said:

"Your father.""
