Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Smile
Nobody moved after Sloan spoke.
She realized what she had said.
And for once, she couldn't hide behind a smile.
Harrison stepped toward her.
"What did you mean?""
Sloan looked around.
The neighbors.
The family.
The people who had watched her pretend for years.
Then she did something unexpected.
She cried.
Real tears.
At least they looked real.
"I was scared.""
Harrison stared at her.
"Scared?""
"Yes.""
She wiped her face.
"You don't understand.""
I almost laughed.
Because that was Sloan's favorite sentence.
You don't understand.
She used it whenever someone got too close to the truth.
Harrison folded his arms.
"Then make me understand.""
Sloan looked at Ava.
"I knew Rachel.""
Ava froze.
"My mother?""
Sloan nodded slowly.
"We were friends.""
Nobody expected that.
Not even Daniel.
"Friends?"" he repeated.
Sloan ignored him.
"Rachel was struggling. She was young. She was alone.""
Ava's voice was cold.
"She had Harrison.""
Sloan looked away.
"She thought she did.""
Harrison's face hardened.
"What does that mean?""
Sloan took a shaky breath.
"Before you met me, Harrison, you and Rachel were already having problems.""
"Problems?""
"She was going to leave.""
The words landed heavily.
Ava looked confused.
"My mother loved him.""
"You only know what she told you.""
"No," Ava replied.
"I know what she wrote.""
Sloan's eyes narrowed.
For a moment, her old personality returned.
Sharp.
Cruel.
Controlled.
"You think a letter tells the whole story?""
Harrison stepped forward.
"Stop changing the subject.""
Sloan looked at him.
"I found out Rachel had been hiding things.""
"What things?""
She hesitated.
That hesitation mattered.
"I found out Ava wasn't the only secret.""
Everyone went silent.
I felt a chill.
Because every secret seemed to lead to another.
Harrison frowned.
"What are you saying?""
Sloan looked at Ava.
"I'm saying your mother wasn't honest with you.""
Ava's face went pale.
"Don't.""
Sloan continued.
"Rachel knew she was sick.""
Daniel immediately shook his head.
"That's not true.""
"She knew.""
"You twisted everything.""
Sloan looked at him.
"You weren't there.""
"No," Daniel said.
"But I was there when Rachel wrote the letter.""
Sloan's expression changed.
"You saw it?""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
Harrison looked confused.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Daniel looked ashamed.
"Because Rachel asked me not to.""
"Why?""
Daniel looked at Ava.
"Because she wanted Ava safe.""
Ava's eyes filled with tears.
"Safe from what?""
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel looked at Sloan.
"From people who wanted to control her.""
Sloan shook her head.
"This is ridiculous.""
But her voice lacked confidence.
Harrison took the letter again.
"There has to be more.""
"There is," Ava said.
Everyone looked at her.
She reached into her bag.
"I found this with my mother's belongings.""
She handed him a small photograph.
It was old and faded.
Harrison looked at it.
Then froze.
"What?""
He handed it to me.
The photo showed Rachel holding baby Ava.
But standing beside her was another person.
A person I recognized.
My hands started shaking.
Because I knew that face.
Everyone in my family knew that face.
It was Harrison's father.
My late husband.
But the date written on the back was impossible.
Ava was born in March.
The photo was dated January.
Two months earlier.
"What does this mean?"" Harrison asked.
I couldn't answer.
Because my husband had always told me he had never met Rachel.
Never spoken to her.
Never known about Ava.
But the photograph proved he was lying.
And then Ava said something that made my blood run cold.
"My mother said your father was the only person who tried to help us.""
Harrison looked at me.
"My father?""
I stared at the photo.
All these years, I thought Sloan was the only person hiding something.
I was wrong.
My own marriage had been built on a secret.
And before I could speak, my phone rang.
The number was unknown.
I answered.
A man's voice came through.
"Marianne?""
My blood froze.
Because I knew that voice.
It belonged to someone who had been dead for twelve years.
"Harrison's father wanted you to know the truth.""
I couldn't breathe.
"Who is this?""
The man paused.
May you like
Then whispered:
"The man you buried was never the man you thought he was.""
