Chapter 12: The Child Left Behind
Nobody spoke after the message appeared.
The photograph sat on my phone screen.
Two babies.
Side by side.
Tiny hands.
Closed eyes.
A hospital blanket covering them.
One of them was Harrison.
I knew because I had held him.
I knew because I had spent my entire life memorizing every detail of his face.
But the other baby...
The other baby looked exactly the same.
I felt dizzy.
"My son...""
Harrison took the phone from me.
His expression changed as he looked.
"That's impossible.""
Daniel stared.
"Twins.""
Ava whispered the word.
Like she was afraid saying it too loudly would break reality.
Sloan looked at the photograph.
And for the first time, she looked truly shocked.
"You didn't know.""
I turned toward her.
"You knew something.""
She shook her head.
"No.""
But nobody believed her anymore.
Not after everything.
Harrison looked at the message.
"Who sent this?""
No answer.
Then another message appeared.
Same number.
"You want the truth? Come to St. Matthew's Hospital.""
Below it was a time.
Midnight.
Tonight.
Daniel looked at the screen.
"That's where Rachel gave birth.""
Ava's face changed.
"My mother always hated that place.""
"Why?""
"She said something terrible happened there.""
I looked at Harrison.
"We have to go.""
He nodded.
No hesitation.
For years, my son had lived with missing pieces.
Tonight, we were finally going to find them.
When we arrived at St. Matthew's, the building looked abandoned.
Half the lights were off.
The old maternity wing had been closed for years.
A security guard stopped us.
"Can I help you?""
Harrison showed him the message.
The man's expression changed.
"You came.""
I frowned.
"You were expecting us?""
He looked nervous.
"Someone paid me to let you through.""
"Who?""
He didn't answer.
He just handed Harrison a key.
"Room 214.""
My heart tightened.
Room 214.
The room where Harrison was born.
The hallway smelled like dust and old memories.
Every step felt heavier.
When we reached the door, Harrison unlocked it.
Inside was a single box.
Nothing else.
No person.
No explanation.
Just a box.
Ava opened it.
Inside was a recording.
An old cassette tape.
Daniel found a player on the shelf.
The tape began.
A woman's voice filled the room.
Rachel.
Everyone recognized it immediately.
"If you are hearing this, then Richard failed.""
Ava covered her mouth.
Rachel continued.
"I knew he would try to erase my daughter.""
She paused.
"But I never imagined he would take someone else's child too.""
Harrison closed his eyes.
Rachel's voice became softer.
"Marianne, I am sorry.""
I froze.
She was speaking to me.
"I wanted to tell you everything. I wanted you to know what happened.""
My eyes filled with tears.
"Your son was not stolen because of an accident.""
A pause.
"He was stolen because Richard believed he could control the future.""
Harrison gripped the table.
"Where is he?""
Rachel answered.
"The second child was taken away.""
Ava whispered:
"Taken where?""
The tape continued.
"Richard arranged a private adoption.""
The room went silent.
Harrison looked devastated.
"He gave away my brother.""
Rachel's voice broke.
"But someone stopped him.""
A strange feeling passed through me.
Someone stopped him.
"Who?""
The tape continued.
"The person who saved the child was the last person Richard expected.""
The recording crackled.
Then Rachel said:
"Robert.""
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Robert.
My husband.
The man who carried secrets until his death.
Rachel continued:
"Robert discovered what Richard had done. He took the child before Richard could destroy his life.""
Harrison looked at me.
"Where did Dad take him?""
The tape went silent.
Then Rachel spoke one final sentence.
"The child was raised under another name.""
Ava leaned closer.
"Which name?""
The tape ended.
Everyone stared at the machine.
Then the door behind us opened.
A man stood there.
Older.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
Eyes that looked exactly like Harrison's.
He looked at me.
And whispered:
"Marianne.""
My heart stopped.
Because I knew that face.
I had seen it before.
In old family photographs.
In Robert's hidden documents.
The man took one step forward.
"I'm sorry it took so long.""
Harrison stared at him.
"Who are you?""
The stranger looked at him.
May you like
And answered:
"I'm your brother.""
