Chapter 3: The Girl Sloan Erased

The word echoed through the backyard.

Grandma.

I had never heard that word from her before.

Yet somehow, it felt familiar.

The young woman standing in front of me looked like a stranger and a memory at the same time.

Her eyes were Harrison's.

Her smile reminded me of my late husband.

And around her neck was a necklace I recognized instantly.

A small silver pendant shaped like a bird.

My mother's necklace.

The one I had given Harrison when he turned eighteen.

The one he told me he lost years ago.

I looked at Sloan.

She looked away.

That was when I knew.

This wasn't just a secret.

This was a carefully built wall of lies.

The young woman stepped forward.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt.""

Nobody spoke.

She looked nervous.

Like she expected to be rejected.

Like she had spent her whole life preparing for that moment.

Harrison stared at her.

"Who are you?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"My name is Ava.""

He swallowed.

"And you're saying you're my daughter?""

Ava nodded.

"Yes.""

Harrison looked at Sloan.

"Is this true?""

Sloan opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

For once, she had no clever response.

No insult.

No excuse.

Just silence.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Ava was born before you and Sloan got married.""

Harrison frowned.

"Then why didn't I know?""

Ava looked down.

"Because your wife made sure you didn't.""

Sloan suddenly shouted.

"That's not true!""

Everyone jumped.

She pointed at Ava.

"She is lying.""

Ava flinched.

And that small reaction told me everything.

Sloan had done this before.

She knew exactly how to attack someone when they were vulnerable.

I stepped closer to Ava.

"How long have you known about Harrison?""

She looked at me.

"All my life.""

My chest tightened.

"All your life?""

She nodded.

"My mother told me who my father was before she died.""

The patio became painfully quiet.

"She tried contacting him," Ava continued.

"But Sloan found out.""

Harrison's face changed.

"What did Sloan do?""

Ava looked at her.

"She threatened my mother.""

Sloan shook her head.

"You're twisting things.""

"No," Ava said softly.

"I'm finally saying them.""

That was the strongest thing anyone had said all day.

I watched my daughter-in-law carefully.

The woman who had ruined my birthday cake.

The woman who had mocked my age.

The woman who had made me feel unwanted in my own family.

Now I understood.

Cruel people rarely start with cruelty.

They start with control.

They start by deciding who gets to know the truth.

Harrison sat down.

His hands covered his face.

"My whole life...""

His voice broke.

"Twenty-three years.""

I wanted to comfort him.

But I was angry too.

Because while my son was grieving the daughter he never knew, I was thinking about all the moments Sloan had stolen.

Birthdays.

Holidays.

Family dinners.

Every time she pushed me away, there was a reason.

She didn't want me close enough to discover the truth.

Ava walked toward Harrison slowly.

"I didn't come here to ruin your family.""

He looked up.

"Then why come now?""

She glanced at the burned purse.

Then at Sloan.

"Because I found something.""

My eyes moved toward the ashes.

"What?""

Ava reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out a small envelope.

Not the one from the purse.

A different one.

Older.

Yellowed.

"I found this in my mother's things after she died.""

She handed it to Harrison.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

His hands began shaking.

"What is it?"" I asked.

He looked at me.

And tears filled his eyes.

"It's Mom.""

I froze.

"My mother?""

He nodded.

Ava whispered,

"She wasn't just hiding me from you.""

She looked at Sloan.

"She was hiding what happened the night I was born.""

Sloan suddenly stood.

"We need to leave.""

Nobody moved.

Harrison looked at her.

"No.""

His voice was different now.

Stronger.

"What happened that night?""

Sloan backed away.

For the first time, she looked afraid of my son.

Then Ava pulled out one final piece of paper from the envelope.

A police report.

And at the top was a date.

The same night Harrison had always believed his first wife left him.

But the report revealed something nobody expected.

Sloan hadn't discovered Ava by accident.

She had known about her from the beginning.

And she had been hiding one more secret.

One that could destroy everything Harrison thought he knew about his own marriage.
