Chapter 14: The Man Who Buried the Truth
The door opened slowly.
Richard Mercer stepped inside.
Older than I remembered.
But exactly the same where it mattered.
The same cold eyes.
The same calm expression.
The same confidence of a man who believed consequences were for other people.
He looked around the room.
At Harrison.
At Ava.
At Ethan.
Then finally at me.
"Marianne.""
Hearing my name from him made my skin crawl.
I stepped back.
"You knew.""
Richard smiled slightly.
"I knew eventually this would happen.""
Harrison moved between us.
"You ruined our lives.""
Richard looked almost offended.
"That's a dramatic way to describe it.""
Ava stared at him.
"You stole my mother from me.""
Richard looked at her.
"I prevented a bigger disaster.""
Daniel laughed.
"You still believe that?""
Richard ignored him.
"Everyone thinks they understand what happened.""
He walked farther into the room.
"But nobody knows the full story.""
Harrison's voice was cold.
"Then explain.""
Richard looked at him.
"Your father was weak.""
My hands clenched.
"Don't.""
Richard continued.
"He cared too much. That was his problem.""
"You threatened him.""
"I warned him.""
"You destroyed families.""
Richard sighed.
"Families destroy themselves.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"You tried to erase me.""
Richard looked at him.
"I tried to prevent chaos.""
Ethan's face hardened.
"You left me with strangers.""
"I gave you a chance at life.""
"No.""
Ethan's voice shook.
"You stole my life.""
For the first time, Richard looked uncomfortable.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
He wasn't sorry.
He was afraid.
Harrison noticed too.
"You aren't here to apologize.""
Richard smiled.
"No.""
"Then why are you here?""
Richard looked at the papers in Harrison's hand.
"Because your father left behind something dangerous.""
Ava frowned.
"What?""
Richard didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at me.
"Robert never told you everything.""
My heart tightened.
"What else?""
Richard stepped closer.
"The night he died, he wasn't going to meet me.""
Nobody moved.
"Who was he meeting?""
Richard looked directly at me.
"You.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"Yes.""
Harrison looked confused.
"Mom?""
Richard continued.
"Robert discovered the truth about Ethan. He was going to tell you.""
I remembered that night.
Robert coming home.
The folder.
The fear in his eyes.
"Then why didn't he?""
Richard's smile disappeared.
"Because someone got to him first.""
The room went silent.
Ava whispered:
"You mean...""
Richard nodded.
"Robert's death was not an accident.""
My heart stopped.
Harrison looked at him.
"You're lying.""
Richard shrugged.
"Maybe.""
"Maybe?""
"But you should ask your mother what she remembers.""
Everyone looked at me.
I hated that.
Because suddenly I was standing in the center of another secret.
I closed my eyes.
The night came back.
The rain.
The phone call.
The hospital.
And something else.
Something I had buried.
A man standing outside my house.
A voice saying:
"Forget what you saw.""
I opened my eyes.
"I saw someone.""
Harrison froze.
"What?""
I looked at him.
"The night your father died.""
Richard's expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
"I saw someone.""
"Who?""
I looked at Richard.
"I don't know.""
Then Ethan spoke.
"I do.""
Everyone turned.
Ethan looked terrified.
"I saw him too.""
Richard went still.
Harrison stared.
"When?""
"The night I was taken.""
The room froze.
Ethan swallowed.
"Richard wasn't alone.""
Richard's face finally lost its calm.
"Don't.""
Ethan continued.
"There was another person helping him.""
Ava stepped closer.
"Who?""
Ethan looked at me.
"I'm sorry.""
My heart pounded.
"Who?""
Ethan whispered:
"Your mother.""
I felt the world tilt.
"My mother died years before.""
Ethan shook his head.
"Not your mother.""
He looked at Richard.
"His mother.""
Everyone turned.
Richard's face went pale.
"My grandmother?"" Harrison asked.
Ethan nodded.
"Richard didn't create this alone.""
The truth became darker.
This wasn't one person's secret.
It was a family legacy.
Richard turned toward the door.
But Harrison blocked him.
"No.""
For the first time, Richard looked afraid.
"You don't understand what you're uncovering.""
Harrison stared at him.
"I understand enough.""
Richard looked at him.
"You think knowing the truth will make you free?""
He laughed quietly.
"It won't.""
Then he reached into his coat.
Everyone froze.
But he didn't pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a photograph.
He placed it on the table.
"You want the final secret?""
Nobody spoke.
May you like
Richard looked at me.
"Ask your husband why he never told you about the third child.""
