Chapter 17: The Woman Behind the Hospital Files

The voice disappeared before I could respond.

I stared at my phone.

Everyone watched me.

"Who was it?""

I shook my head.

"I don't know.""

Michael's expression changed.

"You should.""

That scared me.

"What do you mean?""

He looked toward the hospital doors.

"Because only one person had access to those records.""

Harrison frowned.

"Who?""

Michael hesitated.

Then said:

"The woman who delivered the babies.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"The nurse?""

Michael nodded.

"Her name was Evelyn Shaw.""

Ava looked confused.

"Where is she now?""

Michael looked away.

"She disappeared after Robert died.""

The pattern was becoming impossible to ignore.

Every person connected to the truth vanished.

Every record disappeared.

Every answer created another question.

Harrison looked at me.

"Mom, we need to find her.""

I nodded.

Not because I was ready.

Because I wasn't.

But because I had spent twenty-three years living inside a lie.

I was done being afraid of the truth.

Two hours later, Michael found an address.

Evelyn lived in a small house outside the city.

The kind of place where people went when they wanted to disappear.

When we arrived, the lights were on.

Someone was home.

Harrison knocked.

No answer.

Then a voice called from inside.

"I know why you're here.""

The door opened slightly.

An elderly woman stood there.

Her eyes moved across our faces.

Then stopped on Ethan.

She started crying.

"Oh my God.""

Ethan froze.

"You know me?""

She nodded.

"I never forgot you.""

Harrison stepped forward.

"Who are you?""

The woman opened the door.

"My name is Evelyn Shaw.""

The woman who held the truth for twenty-three years.

She invited us inside.

The walls were covered with old photographs.

Many of them were hospital pictures.

Documents.

Notes.

Evidence.

She had been collecting everything.

"Why?""

I asked.

She looked at me.

"Because I failed you.""

My chest tightened.

"You didn't fail me.""

She shook her head.

"I signed the papers.""

Silence.

Harrison stared.

"What papers?""

Evelyn sat down.

"The transfer papers.""

Ethan looked hurt.

"You gave me away.""

She cried.

"No.""

Her voice broke.

"I saved you.""

Nobody spoke.

She continued.

"Richard came to the hospital that night. He had documents. He had threats.""

"What threats?""

"He said if I didn't cooperate, he would make sure Marianne and both children disappeared.""

I felt sick.

"Both children?""

She nodded.

"You had complications after delivery. You were unconscious. Richard used that moment.""

Harrison looked angry.

"And you let him?""

Evelyn looked at him.

"No.""

She opened a drawer.

"I made a copy.""

Inside were original documents.

Birth records.

Hospital notes.

And one more file.

A transfer record.

Ethan's name.

But underneath it was another signature.

A signature I recognized.

I stared.

"No.""

Harrison noticed.

"Mom?""

My fingers went cold.

Because the signature belonged to someone I trusted.

Someone who had held my hand after childbirth.

Someone who had promised to love me forever.

Robert.

Ethan saw my reaction.

"Your husband signed it?""

I nodded slowly.

Everyone went quiet.

Then Evelyn spoke.

"Robert signed because Richard forced him.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

"Because Richard had someone watching you.""

"Who?""

Evelyn opened another file.

Inside was a photograph.

A man standing outside our old house.

Watching.

The image was blurry.

But the face was clear enough.

My heart stopped.

I knew him.

Everyone knew him.

Because he had attended Robert's funeral.

He had comforted me.

He had stood beside my family for years.

Harrison whispered:

"Uncle Michael.""

Michael froze.

Nobody moved.

Evelyn looked at him.

"You weren't protecting them.""

Michael's face changed.

"I was.""

"No.""

Evelyn's voice became firm.

"You were protecting yourself.""

The room went silent.

Michael looked at us.

And finally admitted:

"I made one mistake.""

Harrison stared.

"What mistake?""

Michael looked down.

"I told Richard where the babies were.""

Ethan stepped back.

"Why?""

Michael's eyes filled with shame.

"Because he threatened my daughter.""

Nobody expected that.

But before we could ask more, Evelyn's phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face turned pale.

"What?""

She listened.

Then whispered:

"He's alive.""

I frowned.

"Who?""

Evelyn looked at us.

"The man who started all of this.""

A pause.

May you like

Then:

"Richard Mercer.""
