Chapter 10: The Son I Almost Lost

Robert's face filled the old computer screen.

For a moment, nobody breathed.

It was impossible.

Twelve years had passed since I last heard his voice.

Yet there he was.

The same tired eyes.

The same small crease between his eyebrows when he was carrying a burden.

Except this time, he wasn't looking at me like his wife.

He was looking at me like someone saying goodbye.

"Marianne," the recording began, "if you are watching this, then I wasn't able to tell you the truth myself.""

My hand covered my mouth.

Harrison stood behind me.

Ava stood beside him.

Daniel remained near the door.

Nobody interrupted.

Robert continued.

"I spent years trying to protect our family. I thought keeping secrets would prevent pain.""

He paused.

"But secrets don't disappear. They grow.""

The video shook slightly, as if he had recorded it in a hurry.

"There are two things you need to know.""

My heart pounded.

"The first is about Rachel Collins.""

Ava stepped closer to the screen.

"Rachel was never my affair.""

The room went silent.

Harrison looked at Ava.

Robert continued.

"I loved Rachel once, but not the way people assumed. She was my friend. She was someone who needed help.""

Ava closed her eyes.

"My mother knew.""

Daniel nodded quietly.

"Yes," he whispered.

The recording continued.

"When Rachel discovered she was pregnant, she was terrified. Not because of me. Because of Richard.""

Harrison's jaw tightened.

"Richard.""

Robert looked directly into the camera.

"Richard was stealing from the company. Rachel found evidence.""

I looked at Harrison.

Everything was connecting.

The lies.

The threats.

The accident.

Robert had known.

But he hadn't stopped it.

Why?

"Richard threatened Rachel," Robert said.

"He told her that if she exposed him, he would destroy everyone connected to her.""

Ava wiped her eyes.

"She was brave enough to fight him.""

The video paused briefly.

Then Robert said something that made my body freeze.

"The second thing you need to know is about Harrison.""

My son stepped forward.

"Me?""

Robert's face softened.

"Harrison, if you are watching this, I need you to know something.""

A long silence.

"You are my son.""

Harrison looked confused.

I felt relief for half a second.

Then Robert continued.

"But not in the way you think.""

My heart dropped.

The video changed.

A photograph appeared.

A baby.

A hospital bracelet.

A name.

Harrison Mercer.

Robert's voice became quieter.

"When you were born, there was a complication.""

I stared at the screen.

I remembered that day.

The hospital.

The fear.

The doctors rushing.

The moment they placed my baby in my arms.

Robert continued.

"You were born with serious medical problems. The doctors warned us we might lose you.""

Harrison looked at me.

I couldn't speak.

"I promised Marianne I would do anything to save our son.""

The image disappeared.

"And then Richard found out.""

The room became colder.

"Richard had connections at the hospital. He knew about the records.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"What did he do?""

Robert answered from the screen.

"He changed them.""

Harrison froze.

"What?""

Robert looked devastated.

"He changed the adoption records of another child.""

Nobody moved.

My mind struggled to follow.

"What child?""

Robert's voice cracked.

"Ava.""

Ava gasped.

"No.""

The recording continued.

"Richard wanted to create a false identity for Ava so she could never expose him. He used the hospital confusion to make it look like Rachel's child disappeared.""

Harrison looked at Ava.

"Then...""

Robert took a breath.

"Then there is one final truth.""

He looked into the camera.

"The night Ava was born, Rachel was not the only person Richard tried to erase.""

The video ended.

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Then Harrison whispered:

"Play it again.""

I pressed the button.

The same words.

The same impossible truth.

But this time, something stood out.

A detail I had missed.

Robert said:

"The night Ava was born.""

Not the night she disappeared.

Not the night of the accident.

The night she was born.

I turned toward Daniel.

"Where was Rachel when Harrison was born?""

Daniel looked confused.

"I don't know.""

Ava suddenly stood.

"Wait.""

Everyone looked at her.

"My mother kept one thing from me.""

She reached into her bag.

"I thought it was just a keepsake.""

She pulled out an old hospital bracelet.

My fingers went cold.

Because I recognized the hospital name.

The same hospital where Harrison was born.

Harrison stared at it.

"Why would she have that?""

Ava looked at the bracelet.

"Because she told me my life began there.""

Nobody spoke.

Then she turned it over.

There was a handwritten note.

A name.

A date.

And one sentence.

My blood ran cold when I read it.

Because the date was the same day Harrison was born.

May you like

And the sentence said:

"Your brother was taken from me.""
