Chapter 8: The Daughter They Wanted to Steal

I ran upstairs so fast I nearly fell.

“Lily!””

The bedroom door flew open.

My daughter sat up, frightened.

“Daddy?””

I rushed to her side.

She was there.

Safe.

Clara came in behind me, her face pale.

“What happened?””

I showed her the phone.

The photograph.

The angle.

The room.

The time.

Someone had been inside.

Someone had stood beside our daughter while she slept.

Clara pulled Lily into her arms.

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“No one touches her again.””

The police arrived within minutes.

Detective Harris searched the house.

No broken windows.

No forced doors.

Nothing.

That made it worse.

Because it meant whoever took the photo had access.

Someone who knew our home.

Someone who belonged there.

The next morning, Ethan’s name was everywhere.

Detective Harris found old financial records showing money transferred between him and Rebecca.

Not once.

Not twice.

For months.

“I don’t understand,” I said.

Detective Harris placed the documents on the table.

“Your brother was in debt.””

“How much?””

“Enough to lose everything.””

Clara looked at the papers.

“And Rebecca used that.””

“Yes.””

I sat down.

My own brother.

The person who shared my childhood.

The person who stood beside me when our father died.

The person I trusted.

“How could he?””

Nobody answered.

Because there was no answer.

Later that afternoon, Lily asked the question I was afraid of.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Is Uncle Ethan bad?””

I froze.

Children shouldn’t have to learn about betrayal.

They should worry about cartoons and homework.

Not adults who tried to destroy their lives.

“I don’t know, sweetheart.””

Lily looked down.

“Rebecca said grown-ups always leave.””

My heart shattered.

I knelt beside her.

“Your mommy came back.””

She looked toward Clara, who was sitting nearby.

“And you stayed.””

“Yes.””

“Then maybe some people come back.””

I hugged her.

That evening, Clara and I reviewed everything we knew.

“She didn’t just want me gone,” Clara said.

“She wanted your place.””

I nodded.

“Your name. Your home. Your daughter.””

Clara looked at me.

“She wanted to become the only mother Lily remembered.””

The thought made me sick.

Rebecca hadn’t just tried to replace Clara.

She tried to rewrite history.

To make Lily forget the woman who loved her first.

A knock came at the door.

I grabbed the security camera footage.

A delivery driver stood outside.

But Detective Harris noticed something.

“Pause.””

I froze the screen.

“What?””

“Look at his left hand.””

I zoomed in.

A small scar.

A familiar ring.

Clara whispered:

“That’s not a delivery driver.””

Detective Harris nodded.

“It’s Ethan.””

My heart stopped.

The man who took the photo of Lily.

The man who knew our house.

The man who betrayed his own family.

He had been standing outside our door less than an hour ago.

Then the camera captured something else.

Ethan looked directly into the lens.

Like he knew we were watching.

And he mouthed four words.

“I know you’re there.””
