Chapter 15: The Secret Clara Forgot

The words followed us out of the abandoned estate.

*Your child before Lily.*

Nobody understood.

But Clara did.

I saw it in her face.

A flash of memory.

Pain.

Fear.

She stood completely still.

“Clara?””

She didn’t answer.

“Clara, what did he mean?””

Her hand moved to her chest.

“I don’t know.””

But her voice said something different.

She knew something.

Something buried.

Detective Harris approached carefully.

“Do you remember anything?””

Clara shook her head.

“No.””

Then she stopped.

Her eyes widened.

A memory.

A fragment.

“I…”

Everyone waited.

“I remember a room.””

“What room?””

“A hospital.””

My heart tightened.

“After the crash?””

She closed her eyes.

“No.””

The answer shocked us.

“Before.””

The world went quiet.

Clara grabbed the edge of the table.

“I was pregnant.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I remember.””

She looked broken.

“Before Lily.””

Detective Harris spoke softly.

“Are you saying you had another child?””

Clara nodded slowly.

“I was pregnant before I had Lily.””

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“But you never told me.””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t know.””

The words were painful.

“I lost the baby.””

My heart broke.

“When?””

“Years ago.””

She touched her forehead.

“I blocked it out.””

Richard’s words suddenly made sense.

He wasn’t talking about Lily.

He was talking about the child Clara lost.

A secret hidden by trauma.

But why?

What did that have to do with the crash?

Detective Harris looked at the documents.

“We need to know what happened.””

Clara nodded.

That night, we returned home.

But the house felt different.

Like every wall held another secret.

Lily noticed immediately.

“Mommy?””

Clara looked up.

“Yes?””

“Why are you crying?””

Clara forced a smile.

“I’m okay.””

Lily touched her face.

“You always say that when you’re not.””

That broke Clara.

She pulled Lily close.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For missing time with you.””

Lily hugged her.

“I waited.””

The simplicity of those words destroyed me.

A child had waited two years for a mother who was fighting to return.

And now we were discovering even more people had tried to keep them apart.

The next morning, Detective Harris arrived with new information.

“We found something at the old estate.””

“What?””

“A hidden room.””

Clara looked at him.

“What was inside?””

The detective placed a box on the table.

“Documents.””

My stomach tightened.

“About what?””

He looked at Clara.

“Your missing pregnancy.””

She opened the box with shaking hands.

Inside were medical records.

Photos.

Letters.

And one document that made her stop breathing.

A birth certificate.

Not Lily’s.

Another child’s.

Clara covered her mouth.

“No.””

I looked at the paper.

A name.

A date.

A child who had supposedly died.

But the final line was what destroyed us.

Because it wasn’t marked as deceased.

It was marked:

*Transferred.*

Clara looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Julian…”

I couldn’t speak.

Because at the bottom of the document was another signature.

Richard Carter.

May you like

And beside it—

Rebecca’s name.
