Chapter 14: The Contract of Betrayal

The document sat between us like a weapon.

Clara stared at her own signature.

“That’s impossible.””

Richard smiled.

“You always were too trusting.””

I grabbed the paper.

“What is this?””

A contract.

A legal agreement.

Something about company ownership.

Asset transfer.

Inheritance rights.

But the signature at the bottom belonged to Clara.

Or looked like it did.

“She never signed this,” I said.

Richard laughed.

“You don’t know your wife as well as you think.””

Clara’s eyes narrowed.

“You forged it.””

The smile disappeared slightly.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Her voice became stronger.

“I know my own handwriting.””

Richard looked at her.

“Do you?””

That sentence made her stop.

Because for a moment, doubt appeared.

Not because she believed him.

Because of everything she had lost.

Her memories.

Her identity.

Her confidence.

I stepped between them.

“Stop playing games.””

Richard looked at me.

“You always did that.””

“Did what?””

“Protected people who made you weak.””

My jaw tightened.

“You mean my family?””

“No.””

He looked at Clara.

“I mean your attachments.””

Clara stepped forward.

“You don’t understand love.””

Richard smiled.

“I understand power.””

That was the difference.

He didn’t see people.

He saw pieces.

Tools.

Threats.

Detective Harris’ team was moving around the property, but Richard didn’t seem worried.

That bothered me.

“You knew we would come.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

He looked at the camera hidden near the entrance.

“We’ve been watching each other for a long time.””

My blood ran cold.

“You were watching us?””

“Of course.””

He walked into the room.

“I watched Rebecca fail.””

“Fail?””

“Yes.””

His voice was calm.

“She was supposed to make Clara disappear permanently.””

Clara’s face changed.

“You knew she survived.””

Richard nodded.

“I knew the moment she woke up.””

My heart stopped.

“Then why didn’t you kill her?””

Richard looked almost offended.

“Because I’m not reckless.””

The words made my skin crawl.

“I needed to know what she remembered.””

Clara whispered:

“You were afraid.””

For the first time, Richard’s expression changed.

Anger.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“I do.””

She stepped closer.

“You were afraid I would remember what you did.””

Silence.

I looked at Clara.

“What are you talking about?””

She looked at Richard.

Then at me.

“Before the crash, I found something.””

Richard’s face became still.

“What?””

Clara continued.

“I found financial records.””

My father said nothing.

“Payments to fake companies.””

“Lies.””

“Money being moved out of Carter Industries.””

My stomach dropped.

Richard’s company.

The company he built.

The company he always claimed was his legacy.

“You were stealing?””

Richard laughed.

“Stealing?””

He looked at me.

“I was protecting what I created.””

Clara shook her head.

“You were destroying it.””

Richard’s eyes turned cold.

“That’s why you had to disappear.””

The confession was quiet.

Almost casual.

But it changed everything.

I looked at my father.

“You ordered the crash.””

He didn’t deny it.

“I gave Rebecca an opportunity.””

Clara closed her eyes.

For years, she carried fear.

Now she had the truth.

But sometimes truth hurts more than uncertainty.

Detective Harris’ voice suddenly came through the communication device.

“Julian, we have enough. Keep him talking.””

Richard noticed.

His eyes moved toward my jacket.

Then he smiled.

“You brought the police.””

I froze.

“Yes.””

He sighed.

“You really are your mother’s son.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means you still believe the law protects good people.””

He stepped backward.

A door behind him opened.

I realized too late.

This was never a meeting.

It was a trap.

Richard looked at Clara.

“You want answers?””

She stared at him.

“Yes.””

He smiled.

“Then come alone.””

“No.””

He ignored me.

“Because the truth about the crash…”

He paused.

“…is not the worst thing you lost.””

Clara’s face went pale.

“What do you mean?””

Richard walked through the doorway.

May you like

And before disappearing into the darkness, he said:

“You never knew what happened to your child before Lily.””
