Chapter 17: The Sister Lily Never Knew
The photograph stayed in Clara’s hands all night.
She barely slept.
Neither did I.
Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same image.
A little girl who should have grown up knowing her mother’s voice.
A child stolen before she ever had the chance.
Lily noticed Clara was different.
Children always notice what adults try to hide.
“Mommy?””
Clara looked up from the photograph.
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Who is that?””
The question froze the room.
Lily pointed at the picture.
Clara looked at me.
I didn’t know what to say.
So Clara told the truth.
Not everything.
Not yet.
But enough.
“This is someone important.””
“Who?””
Clara swallowed.
“Your sister.””
Lily’s eyes widened.
“I have a sister?””
Clara nodded.
“Yes.””
The smile that appeared on Lily’s face was heartbreaking.
“I always wanted someone to play with.””
Clara started crying.
Because she had spent years believing she had lost one child.
Now she realized she had lost two years with another.
Detective Harris spent the next several days searching for Emma.
The records were hidden.
The trail was intentionally destroyed.
But one thing helped.
Richard’s mistake.
He had kept one connection.
The person raising Emma.
A woman named Sarah.
When we arrived at her home, I expected anger.
Denial.
Fear.
Instead, Sarah opened the door and immediately started crying.
“You found her.””
Clara froze.
“You know?””
Sarah nodded.
“I always knew.””
The words hit harder than expected.
“You knew Emma’s mother was alive?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Sarah looked ashamed.
“Because Richard threatened me.””
Clara stepped forward.
“What did he say?””
Sarah wiped her tears.
“He said if I ever told the truth, I would lose Emma.””
My heart broke.
Another innocent person trapped by Richard.
“Where is she?””
Sarah looked toward the backyard.
A girl sat there reading.
She looked up.
And Clara stopped breathing.
Because the resemblance was impossible to ignore.
The same eyes.
The same smile.
The same way she tilted her head when she was curious.
Emma walked closer.
“Who are you?””
Clara couldn’t speak.
So I answered.
“This is Clara.””
Emma looked at her.
“Why is everyone crying?””
Clara knelt down.
Her hands trembled.
“Because I’ve been looking for you.””
Emma frowned.
“Why?””
Clara’s voice broke.
“Because I’m your mother.””
The girl stared.
Not with fear.
With confusion.
“I have a mom.””
Sarah closed her eyes.
Clara nodded.
“I know.””
She didn’t blame the child.
She didn’t blame Sarah.
She only cried.
“Someone made us lose each other.””
Emma looked at the photograph in Clara’s hand.
“Is that me?””
Clara nodded.
“Yes.””
For the first time, Emma reached toward her.
A small movement.
A tiny act of trust.
Clara held her hand.
And I watched my wife meet the child she thought was gone forever.
But our reunion was interrupted.
Detective Harris’ phone rang.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He listened.
Then looked at us.
“We have a problem.””
I stood up.
“What happened?””
He lowered the phone.
“Richard knows we found Emma.””
Clara’s face went pale.
“How?””
The detective hesitated.
“Because he just sent a message.””
“What did it say?””
Harris looked at the screen.
May you like
Then read it aloud.
*You found the daughter I took. Now I’ll take the daughter you kept.*
