Chapter 18: The Last Move
The moment Detective Harris read the message, everything changed.
We were no longer uncovering the past.
We were racing against the future.
Lily.
That was all I could think about.
My daughter was still at home with Evelyn.
The drive back felt endless.
Every red light felt personal.
Every second felt stolen.
When we arrived, police were already outside.
My heart nearly stopped.
But then I saw Lily.
Standing in the doorway.
Alive.
Safe.
I ran to her.
She wrapped her arms around me.
“Daddy.””
I held her tightly.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
“Evelyn made me cookies.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She gave me a tired smile.
“He never got inside.””
I breathed again.
“Who?””
She looked toward the street.
“Richard.””
Detective Harris approached.
“He came here.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“He didn’t enter.””
“Why?””
The detective looked toward the security footage.
“Because he wanted us to know he could.””
We watched the recording.
Richard stood outside the gate.
Looking directly at the camera.
Not angry.
Not afraid.
Calm.
Like everything was going according to plan.
Then he left something on the front steps.
A box.
Inside was a letter.
And a key.
The letter was addressed to me.
Julian,
You spent your entire life thinking I hated you.
I didn’t.
I was disappointed in you.
My hands tightened.
You had everything I built and still chose love over power.
I continued reading.
That was your weakness.
Clara stood beside me.
Her face was cold.
But I underestimated one thing.
You became stronger because of the people you loved.
I looked up.
That sounded almost like regret.
Almost.
Then the final lines appeared.
Come to the Carter estate alone.
Bring Clara.
Leave the police behind.
Or you’ll never learn the truth about what happened the night she survived.
I looked at Detective Harris.
“No.””
He immediately shook his head.
“Absolutely not.””
But Clara was already thinking.
“We need to go.””
I turned.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Julian.””
“He wants us there.””
“Yes.””
“It’s a trap.””
“Yes.””
Her answer surprised me.
“Then why?””
“Because every person he hurt deserves an ending.””
I knew she was right.
But I also knew Richard.
He didn’t invite people anywhere.
He prepared stages.
The old estate was dark when we arrived.
Exactly like before.
But this time, we weren’t walking into a mystery.
We were walking into the final chapter.
The front door opened.
Richard stood inside.
“You came.””
Clara stepped forward.
“You took my daughter.””
He looked at her.
“I protected her.””
“You stole her.””
“I saved her from your weakness.””
Clara laughed bitterly.
“You still believe you’re the hero.””
Richard smiled.
“I don’t need to believe it.””
He looked at me.
“I know it.””
I stepped forward.
“This ends tonight.””
Richard looked amused.
“No, Julian.””
He pointed toward the hallway.
“This begins tonight.””
The lights turned on.
A screen appeared on the wall.
A video started playing.
A recording from the night of the crash.
But this time, it showed something we had never seen.
Clara’s car.
Rebecca.
Ethan.
Mark.
And another person standing nearby.
Someone we never expected.
Richard smiled.
“Now you’ll finally understand.””
The video zoomed in.
The person turned toward the camera.
Clara gasped.
Because the person standing beside her damaged car…
was not Rebecca.
It was someone else.
Someone who had been helping Richard from the beginning.
Someone inside our family.
May you like
And when the face appeared clearly on the screen—
I stopped breathing.
