Chapter 5: The Secret I Buried

The silence after Rebecca left felt heavier than any argument we had ever had.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Until Clara finally looked at me.

“Julian.””

I knew that tone.

She wasn’t accusing me.

She was afraid.

“What did she mean?””

I looked at Lily.

She was sitting beside her mother, holding onto Clara’s hand like she was afraid someone would take her away again.

I couldn’t say everything in front of her.

“Not here.””

Clara nodded slowly.

But I saw the hurt in her eyes.

She had just returned from the dead.

And already, another secret was standing between us.

That night, after Lily fell asleep, Clara and I sat in the old living room.

The same room where we had once celebrated birthdays.

The same room where she had told me she was pregnant.

The same room where I cried after losing her.

“You were there,” Clara whispered.

I looked down.

“Yes.””

Her eyes filled with pain.

“On the night of the crash?””

I nodded.

“I was.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

The question broke me.

“Because I thought it was the reason you died.””

Clara stared at me.

I closed my eyes.

Two years earlier, before the accident, Clara and I had our worst fight.

Not about Rebecca.

About money.

About my work.

About how much time I spent away from home.

“I left the house angry that night,” I said.

Clara’s expression softened slightly.

“You went after me.””

“Yes.””

I swallowed.

“I saw your car on the road.””

A painful memory returned.

The rain.

The headlights.

The sound of tires losing control.

“I called your name.””

Clara reached for my hand.

“Julian…”

“I got there minutes later.””

My voice cracked.

“The car was gone.””

She squeezed my fingers.

“Why didn’t you tell the police?””

“Because Rebecca was already there.””

Clara froze.

“She was?””

I nodded.

“She came running from the opposite direction.””

That detail had always bothered me.

A detail I ignored.

“She told me she heard the crash.””

Clara looked away.

“She was there before anyone should have known.””

“Yes.””

The room went quiet.

“I thought I was responsible,” I whispered.

“If I hadn’t followed you… if I hadn’t made you upset…”

Clara shook her head.

“Julian, look at me.””

I did.

“You surviving that night doesn’t mean you caused it.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I spent two years blaming myself.””

“And Rebecca used that.””

I nodded.

“She knew I was vulnerable.””

Clara looked toward the hallway.

Toward Lily’s room.

“She used my daughter too.””

That was the part I couldn’t forgive.

Not the lies.

Not the betrayal.

The way Rebecca looked at Lily.

The way she tried to make a little girl choose between love and fear.

The next morning, Detective Harris returned.

He had new information.

“We searched Mark Ellison’s records,” he said.

“And?””

“He admitted Rebecca paid him.””

Clara sat down.

“Why would he admit it now?””

The detective placed a photograph on the table.

“Because someone sent him evidence.””

I picked up the photo.

It showed Rebecca meeting Mark.

But the date made my stomach drop.

It wasn’t from two years ago.

It was from last month.

“She was still working with him.””

Detective Harris nodded.

“Yes.””

Clara looked confused.

“But why?””

The detective hesitated.

“Because Mark wasn’t only involved in the crash.””

Everyone waited.

“He helped Rebecca hide something else.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

Detective Harris pulled out another document.

“A missing-person report.””

Clara looked at the paper.

Then her face went pale.

Because the name on it wasn’t hers.

It was someone connected to her.

Someone who disappeared the same week she did.

And at the bottom of the report was one sentence written by the investigator:

*The disappearance may be connected to Clara Carter’s attempted murder.*
