Chapter 10: The Brother Who Saved Her

The photograph stayed on the screen for several seconds.

A picture that should have brought relief.

Instead, it created a new wound.

Daniel.

Clara’s brother.

The man everyone believed had vanished.

The man who apparently knew Clara was alive.

And the man who kept her away from us.

I looked at Clara.

She looked like she had been pulled back into a nightmare she thought she escaped.

“Tell me everything.””

My voice was quiet.

But there was pain underneath it.

Clara didn’t answer immediately.

She walked toward the window and stared outside.

“I don’t remember everything.””

“Then tell me what you do remember.””

She closed her eyes.

“When I woke up, I was in a small room.””

“Hospital?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

That surprised me.

“Then where?””

“A cabin.””

The room went silent.

Detective Harris slowly sat down.

“A cabin?””

Clara nodded.

“I couldn’t remember my name. I couldn’t remember you. I couldn’t remember Lily.””

Her voice cracked.

“But I remembered one thing.””

“What?””

“Daniel’s voice.””

She looked down.

“He kept telling me I was safe.””

My chest tightened.

“Safe from what?””

Clara didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t know.

Or because she didn’t want to.

“Clara.””

She looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

That hurt more than if she had lied.

Because I could see the confusion in her eyes.

She wasn’t hiding a secret.

She was fighting a memory.

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“Did Daniel tell you about the crash?””

“No.””

“Did he mention Rebecca?””

Clara hesitated.

Then nodded.

“What did he say?””

She swallowed.

“He said there were people who wanted me gone.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Why didn’t he bring you back?””

Clara looked away.

“I asked him that.””

“And?””

“He said I wasn’t ready.””

The anger inside me rose.

“Not ready?””

“He said my memory was damaged. He said coming back too soon could put Lily in danger.””

Detective Harris looked thoughtful.

“That part might not be completely wrong.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

“If someone wanted Clara dead, bringing her back publicly could have exposed her to another attack.””

I understood his logic.

But my heart refused to accept it.

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question that mattered.

Why leave a husband grieving?

Why leave a child believing her mother was gone?

Why let Rebecca enter our lives?

That night, Clara and I sat outside Lily’s room.

She was sleeping.

The same way she slept when she was a baby.

Small.

Peaceful.

Unaware of the war around her.

“I’m sorry,” Clara whispered.

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For all the years you suffered.””

I shook my head.

“You survived.””

“But you lost me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised both of us.

I looked at my hands.

“I spent two years talking to your pictures.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I spent two years trying to remember your face.””

I looked at her.

“And now?””

She smiled sadly.

“Now I’m afraid to close my eyes because I might wake up somewhere else.””

I reached for her hand.

“We’ll find the truth.””

She squeezed my fingers.

“No matter what?””

“No matter what.””

The next morning, Detective Harris called.

“We found Daniel.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

“He turned himself in.””

Clara stood immediately.

“What?””

The detective’s voice became serious.

“He asked for you.””

An hour later, we sat across from Daniel in an interrogation room.

He looked older.

Tired.

Broken.

But he was alive.

Clara stared at him.

“Why?””

Daniel looked down.

“I knew this day would come.””

“Why did you hide me?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

He looked at me.

“Of what would happen if you came home.””

My jaw tightened.

“You let her husband and daughter believe she was dead.””

“I know.””

“You let Rebecca take her place.””

“I know.””

Clara slammed her hand on the table.

“You knew Lily was crying for me?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Then how could you?””

A tear fell down his face.

“Because I saw what Rebecca was planning.””

Everyone became silent.

Daniel continued.

“She wasn’t just trying to take your family.””

He looked at Clara.

“She was trying to destroy you.””

Clara stared.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel reached into his pocket.

Then placed a small envelope on the table.

“I found this after the crash.””

Detective Harris opened it.

Inside was a document.

A confession.

But not from Rebecca.

From someone else.

Someone who had been watching the Carter family for years.

Daniel whispered:

“Rebecca wasn’t the beginning.””

May you like

He looked at Clara.

“She was just the person willing to do the dirty work.””
