Chapter 4: The Confession in the File

The detective’s words hung in the air like a storm cloud.

“We found the person who helped tamper with Clara Carter’s brakes,” Detective Harris repeated.

“And he just confessed.””

Rebecca’s face changed instantly.

Not guilt.

Not sadness.

Fear.

Real fear.

I had seen Rebecca angry. I had seen her cold. I had seen her pretend to be innocent.

But I had never seen her terrified.

“Who was it?”” Julian asked.

Detective Harris opened the folder slowly.

“A former employee at the repair shop that serviced your vehicle two years ago.””

Clara’s fingers tightened around Lily’s shoulders.

“Name.””

The detective looked at the paper.

“Mark Ellison.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Rebecca reacted like someone had just spoken a secret only she knew.

She took one step backward.

“No.””

Everyone noticed.

Julian turned toward her.

“Rebecca?””

She forced a laugh.

“That’s ridiculous. I don’t know anyone named Mark Ellison.””

Detective Harris raised an eyebrow.

“You’re sure about that?””

“Yes.””

“Because Mark says differently.””

The room became silent.

Lily held Clara’s hand tighter.

“Who is that man?”” she whispered.

Clara knelt beside her.

“Someone who hurt our family.””

Lily looked at Rebecca.

“Did she hurt us?””

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was too heavy for a child.

I looked at Rebecca.

For two years, I defended her.

I told myself she was just insecure.

I told myself she was struggling to live with a family still grieving another woman.

I told myself her jealousy was normal.

But normal people didn’t force children to beg.

Normal people didn’t push elderly caregivers onto marble floors.

Normal people didn’t look terrified when their supposed enemy walked back through the door.

“Julian,” Rebecca said quietly, “you can’t seriously believe this.””

He stared at her.

“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””

Those words hurt her.

I could see it.

Not because she loved him.

Because she was losing control.

Detective Harris placed several documents on the table.

“We recovered financial records showing payments made to Mark Ellison before the crash.””

Rebecca immediately stepped forward.

“This is fake.””

The detective didn’t move.

“The payments came from an account connected to you.””

My heart sank.

Julian looked at Rebecca.

“Rebecca…”

“No,” she snapped.

“Someone is setting me up.””

Clara watched her carefully.

“Two years ago, you came to the hospital.””

Rebecca went still.

“You remember that?”” she whispered.

“Yes.””

The room froze.

Clara continued.

“You stood beside my bed while I couldn’t even remember my own name.””

Her voice trembled.

“You told the nurses I had no husband. No daughter. No family.””

My skin turned cold.

Julian looked at Rebecca like he was seeing her for the first time.

“Why?””

Rebecca’s lips parted.

No answer came.

Clara stepped closer.

“You wanted me gone.””

“I wanted a life that wasn’t controlled by a dead woman!”” Rebecca shouted.

The confession came so suddenly that even she seemed surprised.

Nobody spoke.

Rebecca’s chest rose and fell.

Then she covered her mouth.

She realized what she had said.

Detective Harris slowly picked up his pen.

“Would you like to repeat that statement?””

Rebecca looked at him.

Her anger returned.

“You’re twisting my words.””

“No,” Clara said softly.

“You’re finally saying them.””

Rebecca’s eyes turned toward Lily.

And that was when I saw something that made my blood run cold.

She wasn’t looking at Lily with anger.

She was looking at her like Lily was the last thing standing between her and everything she wanted.

I moved immediately.

I stepped between them.

“Don’t look at my daughter like that.””

Rebecca’s expression hardened.

“She was never yours alone.””

The words cut through the room.

Julian looked disgusted.

“She is my daughter.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“No. She was always Clara’s daughter first.””

Clara reached for Lily.

“I think you should leave.””

Rebecca laughed.

“You think this is over?””

Detective Harris stepped forward.

“Actually, I think your involvement has only started.””

Two officers entered behind him.

Rebecca stared at them.

“You can’t arrest me.””

“We’re not arresting you tonight,” Detective Harris said.

“But you are not leaving the city.””

Rebecca looked around the room.

At Julian.

At me.

At Clara.

At Lily.

Then she smiled.

A cold, empty smile.

“You all think you won.””

Nobody replied.

Because something about her expression told me she wasn’t finished.

As the officers escorted her toward the door, she stopped beside Clara.

“You should ask your husband where he was the night of the crash.””

Clara’s face changed.

“What?””

Rebecca smiled wider.

“Ask him.””

Then she walked away.

May you like

The door closed.

And suddenly, everyone was looking at me.
