Chapter 11: The Name Hidden in the Shadows
The document changed everything.
For days, we believed Rebecca was the center of the nightmare.
But Daniel’s words opened another door.
Rebecca wasn’t the beginning.
She was only a piece.
Detective Harris carefully examined the document.
“This is old.””
“How old?”” I asked.
“Before the crash.””
Clara stared at the paper.
“Who wrote it?””
The detective looked up.
“That’s the problem.””
“What?””
“The signature is missing.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“But you know who it belongs to.””
Detective Harris studied him.
“You do?””
Daniel nodded.
“I found it in Rebecca’s apartment.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You had access to her apartment?””
“I was investigating her.””
“While my sister was missing?””
Daniel looked at Clara.
“Yes.””
I wanted to be angry.
But I saw something in his face.
Regret.
He had spent two years carrying this alone.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because I thought you were part of it.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“What?””
“I didn’t know who Rebecca was working with.””
Clara looked between us.
“You thought Julian hurt me?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“For a while.””
My heart broke.
“I loved her.””
“I know.””
“Then how could you think I would—”
“Because I saw the fight.””
The room went quiet.
“What fight?””
Daniel looked at Clara.
“The night before the crash.””
My blood ran cold.
“You were there?””
“I saw you two arguing.””
Clara lowered her eyes.
“We were.””
Daniel continued.
“You left angry. Rebecca followed later.””
I froze.
“What?””
Detective Harris leaned closer.
“She followed Clara?””
Daniel nodded.
“I saw her car.””
The pieces started connecting.
Rebecca wasn’t just lucky.
She was watching.
Planning.
Waiting.
“Who was the person behind her?”” Clara asked.
Daniel pushed the document forward.
“Read the first line.””
Clara picked it up.
Her expression changed.
“What?””
She handed it to me.
At the top were several words:
*Carter Family Asset Transfer Plan*
My stomach dropped.
“This is about money?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not just money.””
He pointed at another section.
“It lists the family company, property, insurance policies.””
Detective Harris looked serious.
“Someone wanted control of everything.””
Clara whispered:
“And Lily.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
Lily wasn’t just a child to them.
She was an inheritance.
A key.
A piece on a board.
I stood up.
“I need to see Rebecca.””
Detective Harris stopped me.
“That may not be wise.””
“I need answers.””
“You’ll get them legally.””
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“I spent two years mourning my wife. My daughter spent two years missing her mother. I deserve to hear Rebecca explain why.””
Clara touched my arm.
“I’ll come with you.””
At the detention center, Rebecca looked different.
The confidence was gone.
But the arrogance remained.
When she saw Clara beside me, she smiled.
“I knew you’d come.””
I sat across from her.
“Who was helping you?””
Rebecca laughed softly.
“You finally figured it out.””
“Who?””
She looked at Clara.
“Your family has always been full of secrets.””
Clara’s face hardened.
“Answer him.””
Rebecca leaned back.
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Then ask yourself one question.””
“What?””
“Who benefited most from Clara disappearing?””
Silence.
Then Rebecca smiled.
“Because it wasn’t me.””
I frowned.
“What are you saying?””
Rebecca leaned forward.
“I was promised a future.””
Her voice dropped.
“But someone else was building an empire.””
Clara stared.
“Who?””
Rebecca looked directly at her.
“The person you trusted more than anyone.””
My heart stopped.
Because Rebecca wasn’t looking at me.
She was looking at Clara.
And Clara’s face slowly changed.
“No.””
Rebecca smiled.
“Yes.””
The door opened behind us.
Detective Harris entered.
“Mr. Carter.””
I turned.
He looked worried.
“We need to leave.””
“Why?””
He held up his phone.
“Because someone accessed your home security system.””
My stomach dropped.
“Was Lily alone?””
The detective didn’t answer.
May you like
He didn’t need to.
His expression told me everything.
