Chapter 8: The Letter That Was Never Meant to Be Found
The hospital was thirty minutes away from Briarwood Estate.
But nobody moved.
Not immediately.
Because everyone understood something had shifted.
The wedding was over.
The celebration was over.
Now came the part where people discovered what was underneath.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“What was Marcus going to tell me?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
But this time, nobody believed her.
Not even Daniel.
Richard took the keys from his pocket.
“I’ll drive.””
Daniel looked confused.
“You’re coming?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Richard glanced at the folder.
“Because whatever Marcus wrote may affect the trust agreement.””
My stomach tightened.
Another secret.
Another piece waiting to fall.
I helped Margaret into the car.
She was quiet the entire way.
Too quiet.
Finally, I reached over and held her hand.
“You okay?””
She looked out the window.
“I keep thinking about the bracelet.””
I frowned.
“Margaret.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I know what everyone thinks.””
“What?””
“That I’m hurt because Vanessa insulted me.””
She looked down at her hands.
“But that’s not what hurts most.””
I waited.
“What hurts is that I wanted to believe her.””
That was Margaret.
Always seeing the best in people.
Even when they were proving her wrong.
“She fooled all of us,” I said.
Margaret looked at me.
“No.””
Her voice was soft.
“She fooled Daniel.””
I didn’t answer.
Because she was right.
The hospital hallway smelled like antiseptic and cold air.
Daniel walked quickly toward the front desk.
“Marcus Vale?””
The receptionist typed.
“Are you family?””
Daniel hesitated.
“No.””
The receptionist looked unsure.
“I can only provide information to family.””
Before Daniel could answer, a nurse approached.
“Daniel?””
Everyone turned.
The nurse held a sealed envelope.
“Are you Daniel Whitmore?””
“Yes.””
She handed it to him.
“This was found in Mr. Vale’s jacket.””
Daniel stared at the envelope.
His name was written across the front.
Not printed.
Written.
By hand.
Vanessa stood behind him.
“Open it.””
Daniel looked at her.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then he opened the letter.
The first line made his face change.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
Daniel didn’t answer.
He kept reading.
His hands began shaking.
“Daniel?””
He looked up.
And I knew.
Whatever was written there was worse than anything we had already discovered.
“He knew.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Marcus.””
Her expression tightened.
“Knew what?””
Daniel held the letter.
“He knew Vanessa was planning everything.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel kept reading.
“He wrote that you contacted him before we met.””
“That’s a lie.””
“He wrote that you asked him to find out about my family.””
Her voice rose.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“He wrote that you promised him money after you became my wife.””
The hallway became silent.
Even the nurse looked uncomfortable.
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“You believe a letter from a criminal over me?””
Daniel stared at her.
“I don’t know what I believe anymore.””
That answer seemed to hurt her.
Because she was used to controlling the conversation.
Now she was losing control.
Richard looked at the letter.
“Is there anything else?””
Daniel looked down.
There was one final paragraph.
His face changed again.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“He says Vanessa didn’t choose me because of my money.””
Everyone looked confused.
“Then why?”” I asked.
Daniel read the final words.
“Because she needed access to something else.””
Vanessa’s face went completely still.
“What something?””
Daniel slowly lowered the letter.
And then he looked at me.
“Dad.””
I felt a chill.
“What?””
His voice became almost a whisper.
“She wasn’t after the estate.””
A pause.
“She was after your company records.””
The hallway seemed to disappear.
Because my company had been sold years ago.
But the records Vanessa wanted were not public.
They contained something I had hidden for decades.
Something only family knew existed.
Margaret looked at me.
And I knew from her expression that she remembered.
Daniel noticed.
“Mom?””
Neither of us answered.
“Why are you both looking at each other like that?””
I took a slow breath.
Then I said the words I never wanted my son to hear.
“Because your mother and I have been protecting a secret.””
Daniel stared.
“What secret?””
I looked at the letter in his hand.
Then at Vanessa.
May you like
And finally, I said:
“The secret your grandfather died trying to keep.””
