Chapter 12: The Brother Who Came Back

Nobody spoke after the call ended.

Not immediately.

Because everyone in the room was trying to understand what had just happened.

My brother was alive.

After forty years.

After decades of silence.

He had returned on the same day my family nearly collapsed.

Daniel watched my face carefully.

“Dad.””

I looked at him.

“Who was that?””

I wanted to answer.

I wanted to explain everything.

But some memories are difficult to open.

Like old wounds.

Because once they are exposed, they don’t simply disappear.

They bleed again.

“His name was William.””

Daniel waited.

“My older brother.””

“You never told me about him.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

I looked toward the window.

Outside, the wedding decorations moved in the wind.

“Because he was the reason my father and I stopped speaking.””

Daniel sat down.

“What happened?””

I remained silent.

Margaret reached for my hand.

She had been there when I learned the truth.

She was the only person who knew the entire story.

“Thomas,” she said softly.

I nodded.

“My father trusted William more than anyone.””

Richard listened carefully.

“Then what changed?””

I looked at him.

“The night the second file disappeared.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“You think Uncle William took it?””

“I don’t know.””

“But you think he knows where it is.””

“Yes.””

The room became quiet.

Then Detective Collins entered again.

“Mr. Whitmore.””

I looked up.

“We traced the call.””

Everyone froze.

“Where did it come from?””

He looked at the paper in his hand.

“A property outside the city.””

My heart sank.

“What property?””

He looked at me.

“The old Carter estate.””

Daniel stared.

“That’s impossible.””

I knew why he said that.

The Carter estate had been abandoned for decades.

After Edward Carter died, the family disappeared.

At least, that’s what everyone believed.

Detective Collins continued.

“We also found something else.””

He placed another photograph on the table.

This one was older.

Much older.

It showed two young men standing in front of a company building.

My father.

And William.

Daniel picked it up.

“That’s Uncle William?””

I nodded.

Then he turned the photograph over.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

Written on the back were words I recognized immediately.

Words from my father’s handwriting.

*The truth belongs to the person brave enough to accept it.*

My hands began shaking.

Because my father had always believed truth was dangerous.

But now, after all these years, he had left a message telling us to find it.

The phone rang again.

Everyone looked at me.

This time, I answered immediately.

“William.””

A pause.

Then:

“You finally know.””

My jaw tightened.

“Where are you?””

“You know where I am.””

“Why are you doing this?””

His voice softened.

“Because someone has to finish what our father started.””

I looked around the room.

At Daniel.

At Margaret.

At the documents.

At the evidence of secrets that had poisoned our family for generations.

“What does Vanessa have to do with you?””

Silence.

Too long.

Then William answered:

“Vanessa?””

I heard confusion.

Real confusion.

“She isn’t working for me.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“She’s working for someone else.””

Everyone looked at each other.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who?””

I put the phone on speaker.

William continued:

“The person who told her about the Legacy File.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who?””

My brother’s voice became barely a whisper.

“Thomas…”

I waited.

“Look at the person standing closest to you.””

I turned.

Slowly.

Everyone followed my eyes.

And then I saw it.

Someone in the room who had been silent the entire time.

Someone who had never been questioned.

Someone who had been helping us uncover every secret.

My blood ran cold.

May you like

Because William’s final words came through the phone:

“The person you trust most is the one who opened the door.””
