Chapter 14: My Brother’s Final Warning

Seeing William’s signature on the agreement felt like being pulled back forty years.

Suddenly I wasn’t standing in my estate office.

I was twenty-eight years old again.

Standing in my father’s study.

Watching my brother slam a folder onto the desk.

“You don’t understand what he did,” William had said.

I remembered my father’s face.

Cold.

Angry.

“You’re accusing me of betrayal?””

William had looked at him.

“I’m accusing you of becoming the person you promised you’d never become.””

At the time, I believed my father.

I believed William was jealous.

Bitter.

Wrong.

Now I wasn’t sure.

I looked at the signature again.

“Why is William’s name here?””

Richard sat down.

“Because he was there.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Uncle William was part of the company?””

“Yes.””

“But you said he left.””

“He did.””

“Why?””

I looked at the document.

“Because he discovered the truth.””

Detective Collins pointed at the agreement.

“What truth?””

I took a breath.

“The company was never supposed to belong only to the Whitmore family.””

Richard nodded.

“Edward Carter and Henry Whitmore built it together.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Then why hide it?””

I had asked myself that question for decades.

The answer was painful.

“Pride.””

Nobody spoke.

“My father believed he deserved more because he had worked harder.””

Margaret looked down.

“And William disagreed.””

I nodded.

“He said my father was stealing from his own friend.””

Daniel looked at the document.

“So Uncle William tried to fix it?””

“Yes.””

“And you stopped him?””

The question hurt because it was true.

“I believed my father.””

Daniel looked away.

I saw disappointment in his eyes.

Not because of the company.

Because he was realizing his family had been built on silence.

Richard continued.

“William didn’t disappear because he wanted to.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“He left because someone threatened him.””

The room went still.

“Who?””

Richard hesitated.

Then looked at the document.

“Your father.””

I felt like the air disappeared.

“No.””

Margaret touched my arm.

“Thomas…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My father would never.””

Richard looked at me sadly.

“Thomas, he did.””

Daniel looked between us.

“What happened?””

I closed my eyes.

I had spent forty years avoiding this.

But now avoidance had only brought us here.

“William found evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“That my father had created a fake agreement.””

Daniel stared.

“He forged documents?””

“Yes.””

Richard nodded.

“The second file contains the proof.””

I looked at him.

“And you knew?””

Richard nodded.

“I suspected.””

“Then why help Vanessa?””

Richard’s expression changed.

“I didn’t.””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

Nobody expected it.

“What’s funny?”” Daniel asked.

She looked at Richard.

“He’s still lying.””

Richard stood.

“You’re the liar.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed at the document.

“Ask him why he never gave you the original.””

Everyone looked at Richard.

He didn’t answer.

And that silence was enough.

Daniel whispered:

“Why?””

Richard looked at me.

“Because I was protecting you.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone who hurt us always said the same thing.

Protecting.

Helping.

Saving.

Different words.

Same damage.

Richard continued.

“Your father spent his life hiding what he did.””

He looked at Daniel.

“And your grandfather spent his life trying to undo it.””

I stared.

“What are you saying?””

Richard took a breath.

“The second file isn’t just about ownership.””

“Then what is it about?””

He looked at Daniel.

“It’s about inheritance.””

Daniel frowned.

“What inheritance?””

Richard pointed to the document.

“Not money.””

A pause.

“Blood.””

The room became silent.

Because everyone understood.

Something about the Carter family.

Something about Edward.

Something my father had hidden.

Richard lowered his voice.

“The reason Vanessa wanted that file…”

He looked at me.

“Was because it proves she has a claim.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“What claim?””

May you like

Richard answered:

“The claim that she belongs to the Carter bloodline.””
