Chapter 6: The Wedding Guest Nobody Invited
The attorney’s arrival changed the entire atmosphere.
A few minutes earlier, everyone had been watching a family argument.
Now they were watching a legal battle.
The man introduced himself calmly.
“Daniel, I’m Richard Hayes.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I know who you are.””
Richard held the folder against his chest.
“Good. Then you know I wouldn’t be here unless this was serious.””
Vanessa stepped between them.
“Why are you involved?””
Richard looked at her.
Not angrily.
Not emotionally.
Just professionally.
“That is exactly what we need to discuss.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Dad, what did you do?””
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Because he still thought I was the one causing the damage.
“I found the truth.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
“No,” I said.
“It answers the question you should have asked months ago.””
Richard opened the folder.
Inside were copies of emails, financial records, and legal documents.
Daniel looked nervous.
“What are those?””
Richard glanced at him.
“Evidence.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Evidence of what?””
Richard looked down at the papers.
“Of an attempted transfer of ownership.””
Daniel frowned.
“What ownership?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Richard looked at Vanessa.
“Your ownership request.””
The color disappeared from her face.
“I never made one.””
Richard removed a document.
“You submitted paperwork through a third party.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Your signature is on it.””
Daniel stared at her.
“My signature?””
Richard shook his head.
“No. Hers.””
The silence was unbearable.
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“Someone is setting me up.””
But even she didn’t sound convinced.
Because she knew.
The room knew.
The truth was finally catching up.
Daniel looked at me.
“You knew about this?””
I nodded.
“Two weeks before your wedding.””
His eyes widened.
“And you still let me marry her?””
I looked at him carefully.
“I gave you a chance.””
“A chance?””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“I wanted to believe you would notice.””
Daniel lowered his head.
“I didn’t.””
“No.””
My voice softened.
“You didn’t.””
That hurt him.
Good.
Some lessons only arrive after pain.
Margaret stood quietly beside me.
She looked exhausted.
The woman who had spent years holding everyone together was finally allowing herself to stop.
Daniel looked at her.
“Mom…”
She met his eyes.
“I love you.””
His face broke.
“But love doesn’t mean pretending everything is okay.””
Those words came from the gentlest person I knew.
And somehow, they were the strongest words spoken all day.
Vanessa suddenly grabbed her purse.
“I’m leaving.””
Nobody stopped her.
She walked a few steps.
Then turned back.
“You all think you’re better than me?””
No one answered.
She laughed bitterly.
“You have no idea what I went through.””
I watched her carefully.
Because that was the first time she sounded almost human.
Almost.
Then she ruined it.
“I deserved a better life.””
Daniel stared at her.
“And you thought I was your way to get it?””
She didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
Richard closed the folder.
“There is one more thing.””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“What now?””
Richard glanced at me.
I nodded.
“Tell him.””
Richard opened the final document.
“This was found in Vanessa’s apartment yesterday.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What is it?””
Richard handed him a photograph.
Daniel looked at it.
Then he froze.
Because it wasn’t a financial document.
It wasn’t a contract.
It was a photograph of Vanessa with another man.
A man Daniel had never seen before.
Written on the back of the photograph were three words:
*Before the engagement.*
Daniel looked up slowly.
“Who is he?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Daniel…”
But he stepped away from her.
“Who is he?””
Her silence lasted too long.
And then Daniel saw something in the corner of the photograph.
A date.
A date from three months before he proposed.
His hand started shaking.
Because beneath the date was a message written in black ink.
A message that changed everything.
He read it aloud.
“Thank you for helping me convince him.””
The garden went completely silent.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
May you like
And whispered:
“Who were you really planning to marry?””
