Chapter 11: The Secret My Father Buried
The second file had never been meant to exist outside our family.
Not because it contained money.
Not because it contained property.
Because it contained the one thing my father spent his entire life trying to hide.
The truth.
Detective Collins sat across from me in the estate office.
The same room where my father used to sit behind his wooden desk.
The same room where Daniel had played as a child.
Now it felt like a courtroom.
“Mr. Whitmore,” the detective said, “we need to understand what this file contains.””
I looked at Margaret.
She nodded slowly.
It was time.
“My father built the company with his closest friend.””
Richard listened carefully.
“Who was his friend?””
“Edward Carter.””
The name made Daniel look up.
“Carter?””
I nodded.
“Evelyn Carter’s grandfather.””
Everyone became quiet.
Daniel looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
“It means our families were connected long before you met Vanessa.””
I took a breath.
“My father and Edward started the company together. They were partners.””
Richard opened his notebook.
“But the records show your father owned the company entirely.””
“Yes.””
“That’s the problem?””
I nodded.
“Because he didn’t.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“When the company became valuable, my father made a decision.””
“What decision?””
“He removed Edward’s name from the official records.””
Daniel stared.
“Why?””
“Because he believed Edward was going to betray him.””
Margaret spoke softly.
“But he was wrong.””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
“My father spent years believing he had protected the family.””
I looked at the floor.
“But the truth was that he had destroyed another one.””
Daniel looked troubled.
“So Vanessa was looking for proof?””
“Yes.””
“Proof that the company wasn’t really yours?””
I nodded.
“The second file contains the original ownership agreement.””
Richard looked serious.
“And if it’s real?””
“Then part of the company legally belongs to the Carter family.””
Daniel looked at me.
“How much?””
I didn’t answer.
He understood.
“A lot.””
“Yes.””
The door opened.
Detective Collins entered.
“Mr. Whitmore.””
We all looked up.
“We found something.””
He placed a small evidence bag on the desk.
Inside was a key.
Daniel looked confused.
“What is that?””
Detective Collins looked at me.
“We found it in Marcus Vale’s apartment.””
My stomach tightened.
“Where?””
“Hidden behind a wall panel.””
Richard leaned closer.
“What does it open?””
Detective Collins looked at the label attached to it.
“A private storage unit.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel said:
“Vanessa knew.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“She knew about the second file.””
He stood.
“She wasn’t just looking for company records.””
His voice became stronger.
“She knew exactly what she wanted.””
That was the hardest part.
Daniel was finally seeing everything clearly.
Not because we told him.
Because the evidence forced him to.
Detective Collins looked at me.
“We need to know something.””
“What?””
“Who else knew about this second file?””
I thought about it.
My father.
Edward Carter.
Margaret.
Me.
And one more person.
Someone I had not thought about in decades.
Someone who had disappeared after the company dispute.
“Only family,” I said.
The detective watched me.
“Are you sure?””
I hesitated.
A little too long.
Margaret noticed.
“Thomas?””
I looked at her.
“There was someone else.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?””
I swallowed.
“My brother.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel had never heard me talk about him.
Because I never did.
My older brother, William, had left our family when I was young.
After the argument with my father.
After the missing documents.
After the night everything changed.
“We thought he left forever,” I said.
Richard looked at the key.
“But maybe he didn’t.””
Daniel looked at me.
“You think Uncle William has the file?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
Then my phone rang.
The number was blocked.
Nobody moved.
I stared at the screen.
Because somehow, I already knew.
I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then a man’s voice spoke.
Older.
Rough.
Familiar.
“Thomas.””
My entire body froze.
Daniel looked at me.
“Dad?””
The voice continued.
“You should have left the past buried.””
I stood slowly.
May you like
Because after forty years…
My brother was finally calling me.
