Chapter 10: The File That Exposed Everything

The drive back to Briarwood Estate felt longer than the drive to the hospital.

Nobody spoke.

Not because there was nothing to say.

Because everyone was afraid of what the next truth would be.

Daniel sat in the passenger seat beside Richard.

He stared out the window the entire time.

The confident man who had walked into his wedding that morning was gone.

In his place was someone trying to understand how much of his life had been real.

I sat in the back with Margaret.

She held my hand.

Neither of us said anything.

We didn’t need to.

After forty-five years together, we had learned that silence could carry entire conversations.

When we arrived at the estate, police vehicles were already parked near the entrance.

The same entrance where guests had arrived hours earlier carrying gifts and smiling for photographs.

Now officers walked through the gardens.

The wedding decorations were still there.

The flowers.

The tables.

The empty champagne glasses.

A perfect scene abandoned after a disaster.

Daniel stepped out of the car slowly.

“This is really happening.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“I spent months planning this day.””

He looked at the decorations.

“And it ended like this.””

Margaret touched his arm.

“Daniel.””

He looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

She gave him a sad smile.

“I know.””

The fact that she believed him seemed to hurt him even more.

An officer approached.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“I’m Detective Collins.””

He shook Daniel’s hand.

“We need to ask you some questions.””

Daniel glanced at Vanessa.

She was standing near the garden path.

Alone.

For the first time since I met her, she looked uncertain.

Detective Collins followed his eyes.

“Is that Vanessa Reed?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“She’s the person connected to the documents we recovered.””

Daniel looked down.

“What did you find?””

The detective opened a folder.

“The missing Legacy File.””

Everyone became quiet.

“Where was it?””

Detective Collins looked at Vanessa.

“Hidden inside a storage box registered under her name.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“That doesn’t prove anything.””

The detective remained calm.

“No. It doesn’t.””

Vanessa looked relieved.

Then he continued.

“But the fingerprints do.””

Her face changed.

Daniel stared at her.

“Fingerprints?””

Detective Collins nodded.

“Multiple pages inside the file had your fingerprints.””

Vanessa looked around.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Richard spoke.

“She isn’t.””

Everyone turned.

Richard held a document.

“She signed for access.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard handed him the paper.

“This is a visitor authorization form from the private archive.””

Daniel read it.

His face slowly changed.

At the bottom was Vanessa’s signature.

Not a copy.

Not a forgery.

Her real signature.

“When did you get this?”” Daniel asked.

Richard looked at me.

“Two days before the wedding.””

Daniel stared.

“Two days?””

I nodded.

“I found out she had been asking questions about the company.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

I looked at my son.

“I wanted to.””

His eyes filled.

“But?””

“But Margaret stopped me.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“Mom?””

Margaret looked down.

“I thought maybe there was another explanation.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Even now, his mother was still trying to protect everyone.

Detective Collins turned toward Vanessa.

“Ms. Reed, you need to come with us.””

The garden went silent.

Vanessa laughed.

A small, nervous laugh.

“You’re arresting me?””

“No.””

The detective shook his head.

“Not yet.””

That word made everyone uncomfortable.

“Then why?””

“We need your statement.””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Are you really going to let this happen?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was the first time he didn’t rush to save her.

And Vanessa noticed.

Her expression changed.

“You’re choosing them.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“I’m finally choosing the truth.””

For a moment, she looked like she wanted to say something.

Something emotional.

Something convincing.

But then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face turned pale.

Daniel noticed.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Slowly, she lowered the phone.

“It’s nothing.””

Detective Collins held out his hand.

“May I see?””

She hesitated.

Then handed it over.

The detective looked at the screen.

His expression hardened.

“What?””

He showed the phone to Richard.

Then to me.

The message was from an unknown number.

Only six words.

*He knows where the second file is.*

Daniel looked confused.

“Second file?””

I felt Margaret’s hand tighten around mine.

Because there was only one person who knew about the second file.

Someone from our past.

Someone we thought was gone forever.

I looked at Richard.

He understood immediately.

“Thomas…”

I nodded.

The detective looked at me.

“Mr. Whitmore, what is the second file?””

I stared at the message.

Then at my son.

And I realized something terrifying.

May you like

Vanessa hadn’t been trying to steal my family’s past.

She had been searching for something that could destroy our future.
