Chapter 5: The Truth Under the White Dress
The woman wearing the white dress suddenly looked less like a bride and more like someone caught in a trap.
Vanessa recovered quickly.
She always did.
That was one thing I had noticed about her from the beginning.
She never apologized first.
She calculated first.
“Daniel,” she said softly, “you’re really going to believe some random woman calling your phone?””
Evelyn immediately responded.
“I’m not random.””
Vanessa froze.
Because she forgot the phone was still connected.
Evelyn continued.
“I worked beside Daniel for four years.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Evelyn, what are you talking about?””
“I’m talking about the woman standing next to you.””
Vanessa looked around.
Everyone was watching.
The guests who had arrived to celebrate her marriage were now witnesses to something else.
A secret.
A betrayal.
“Daniel,” Evelyn said, “did Vanessa ever tell you how she knew your financial situation?””
He didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
I remembered the first time Daniel introduced Vanessa.
He had said it was fate.
“She just understands me,” he told Margaret.
But Margaret had looked uncertain.
Because mothers notice things.
Even when sons refuse to.
“She knew things about me,” Daniel said quietly.
Vanessa grabbed his hand.
“Because I cared.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Because I never told you some of those things.””
Her expression shifted.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
The first crack.
Evelyn continued.
“She contacted me six months ago.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What?””
“She wanted information about your family assets.””
The guests gasped.
Vanessa laughed.
A fake laugh.
“This is insane.””
I stepped forward.
“Then explain.””
She looked at me.
“I don’t owe you anything.””
“No.””
I nodded.
“You don’t.””
I looked at Daniel.
“But you owe him the truth.””
Daniel stared at his wife.
“Did you contact Evelyn?””
Vanessa stayed silent.
That silence was louder than an admission.
“Answer me.””
Her eyes hardened.
“Yes.””
The word fell like a stone.
Daniel stepped backward.
“Why?””
Vanessa sighed.
“Because I wanted to understand what I was marrying into.””
I almost couldn’t believe the way she said it.
Like that made everything acceptable.
“You investigated my family?””
“I protected my future.””
Daniel looked hurt.
Not angry.
Hurt.
Because he was finally seeing the difference between love and strategy.
Evelyn spoke again.
“There’s more.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“What else?””
“The property transfer.””
I felt Margaret grab my arm.
She knew what was coming.
Daniel looked at me.
“What about the property transfer?””
I stayed quiet.
Because this was the part I had hoped he would never need to hear.
But hope had ended at the fountain.
Evelyn said:
“Vanessa knew about Briarwood House before you proposed.””
Daniel looked at his wife.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That’s not true.””
Evelyn continued.
“She asked me for the property records.””
Daniel’s voice became smaller.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked away.
And that was when Daniel finally understood.
The marriage wasn’t built on love.
At least not from her side.
I watched my son’s face collapse.
“You wanted my family’s house.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No. Daniel, listen.””
But he stepped back.
“You knew.””
“I knew you had a future.””
“You knew about the estate.””
“I knew you were successful.””
“You knew before you met me.””
The garden went silent.
Because that was the question.
Not whether Vanessa wanted money.
Not whether she liked expensive things.
The question was whether she had chosen him.
Or chosen what came with him.
Margaret slowly walked forward.
“Daniel.””
He looked at her.
His eyes were full of shame.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words almost broke something in me.
Because they were the first honest words he had spoken all day.
Margaret reached for him.
Then stopped.
Her hand lowered.
Not because she didn’t love him.
Because she was finally allowing him to feel the consequences.
Vanessa saw the moment slipping away.
She stepped forward.
“Daniel, don’t do this.””
He looked at her.
“Do what?””
“Throw away everything because your father is angry.””
I shook my head.
“She still doesn’t understand.””
Daniel looked at me.
“What?””
I looked toward the entrance of the estate.
A black car had just pulled into the driveway.
The driver opened the back door.
A man in a suit stepped out.
Daniel recognized him immediately.
His face turned white.
Because that man wasn’t a guest.
He was the attorney who handled the family trust.
And he was carrying a folder.
A very familiar folder.
“Dad,” Daniel whispered.
“What is happening?””
I watched the attorney walk toward us.
Then I said:
“Your mother and I discovered something before this wedding.””
May you like
The attorney stopped beside me.
“And now you’re going to hear the part Vanessa hoped we would never find.””
