Chapter 18: The Sister Hidden From Us

The word stayed in the room.

*Sister.*

A word that should have been impossible.

My entire life, I believed I had one sibling.

William.

Now I was being told there was another.

A sister.

A person who shared my blood.

A person my father erased.

Daniel looked at me.

“Dad?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I had no memory of Clara.

No childhood moment.

No photograph.

No story.

Nothing.

William watched my reaction.

“He hid her from you.””

“Why?””

His face became serious.

“Because she knew the truth.””

I looked at the papers.

“What truth?””

William leaned forward.

“Clara discovered that your father had manipulated the company records.””

Richard had been right.

The secrets went deeper than we imagined.

“What happened to her?””

William looked away.

“She left.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

The answer shocked me.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

William sighed.

“She disappeared before I did.””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“So Vanessa was searching for a file that could prove Clara existed?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

William looked at him.

“Because Clara’s descendants have a claim too.””

I stared.

“Descendants?””

William nodded.

“She had a child.””

The room became silent.

My father had spent decades hiding an entire branch of our family.

A branch that could change everything.

Daniel looked overwhelmed.

“How many people knew?””

William answered:

“Very few.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“Your father.””

A pause.

“Me.””

Another pause.

“And Richard.””

My heart sank.

Richard.

Of course.

The attorney who knew too much.

The man who had carried secrets from generation to generation.

I looked at William.

“Why didn’t Richard tell me?””

“Because he was trying to protect Clara.””

“From what?””

William looked toward the window.

“From the same thing that happened to me.””

The room became quiet.

Then Daniel asked:

“What happened to Uncle William?””

William smiled sadly.

“I lost my family.””

Daniel looked at him.

“But you survived.””

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“Barely.””

I felt the weight of every year we lost.

Every holiday.

Every birthday.

Every moment when my brother could have been there.

And I had believed he chose to leave.

A knock interrupted us.

Everyone froze.

William immediately stood.

Nobody moved.

Another knock.

Then a voice.

“William?””

My blood turned cold.

Because I recognized the voice.

Richard.

But he wasn’t supposed to be here.

William looked at me.

“You brought him?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Daniel whispered:

“Then why is he here?””

Nobody answered.

William walked toward the door.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He opened it.

Richard stood outside.

But he wasn’t alone.

Beside him was a woman.

Older.

Gray hair.

Tears in her eyes.

I felt my entire world stop.

Because I knew her.

Not personally.

But from photographs.

From the face of my father.

From the same eyes that looked back at me in the mirror.

William stepped aside.

The woman looked at me.

And whispered:

“Thomas.””

My hands began shaking.

Nobody had called me that way in decades.

Not since my childhood.

Not since before the family broke apart.

“Who are you?”” Daniel asked.

The woman looked at him.

Then back at me.

“I’m Clara.””

My breath disappeared.

My sister.

The person my father erased.

The person I never knew existed.

She stepped into the house.

“I came because you deserve the truth.””

I couldn’t speak.

After forty years of believing my family was broken because one person left…

I finally understood.

The person who left wasn’t the one who destroyed us.

The person who destroyed us was the one who made sure nobody knew she existed.

Clara looked at the documents on the table.

Then at William.

“It’s time.””

William nodded.

Richard closed the door behind them.

Daniel looked nervous.

“Time for what?””

Clara reached into her bag.

She removed one final envelope.

Older than all the others.

Sealed.

Untouched.

She placed it in front of me.

“This was written by your father.””

I stared.

“What does it say?””

Clara looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“It explains why he erased me.””

A pause.

“And why he was afraid of you finding out.””

I reached for the envelope.

My hands trembled.

Because after everything we had uncovered…

I knew one thing.

The final secret wasn’t about inheritance.

May you like

It wasn’t about money.

It was about the reason my father spent his entire life lying to us.
