Chapter 13: The Person We Never Suspected
The room changed the moment William’s words ended.
“The person you trust most is the one who opened the door.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed normally.
Because everyone was suddenly wondering the same thing.
Who?
My eyes moved across the room.
Daniel.
Margaret.
Richard.
Detective Collins.
Vanessa.
Every person looked different when suspicion entered the room.
Even innocent people.
That was the cruelest part about secrets.
They didn’t only hurt the guilty.
They made everyone look guilty.
Daniel noticed my expression.
“Dad?””
I didn’t answer.
I was thinking.
William knew something.
Something he shouldn’t have known.
He knew someone close to us had opened the door.
Not broken it.
Not forced it.
Opened it.
That meant someone had access.
Someone trusted.
Richard slowly stepped backward.
Only one step.
But I saw it.
And so did Daniel.
“Richard,” Daniel said.
The attorney stopped.
“What?””
Daniel stared at him.
“Why did you step back?””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Because your father is looking at everyone like they’re a suspect.””
Daniel didn’t move.
“That’s not what I asked.””
A tense silence filled the room.
I had known Richard for fifteen years.
He handled my legal affairs.
He helped protect my family.
He had been the person I called when my father died.
The person I trusted with documents I didn’t even show my son.
But now…
I remembered something.
Something small.
Something I ignored.
Richard had always known more than he said.
“Richard,” I said quietly.
He looked at me.
“Yes?””
“When did you know about the Legacy File?””
His eyes shifted.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
Daniel saw it too.
“You didn’t answer.””
Richard sighed.
“I knew your father had hidden something.””
“Not what I asked.””
I stepped forward.
“When did you know?””
Richard looked down.
Then he said:
“Six months ago.””
The room became silent.
Daniel stared.
“Six months?””
Richard nodded.
“I discovered references to it while reviewing old company records.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I wasn’t sure what I found.””
I looked at him.
“But you told Vanessa?””
Richard’s face changed.
“What?””
The question surprised him.
Too much.
I watched carefully.
“You heard me.””
Richard shook his head.
“I never spoke to Vanessa privately.””
Detective Collins stepped closer.
“Then explain why your name appears in her phone records.””
Everyone turned.
Richard froze.
“My name?””
The detective opened his folder.
“We found several calls between you and Vanessa.””
Daniel looked at him.
“How many?””
The detective checked the page.
“Twenty-three.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Richard immediately responded.
“That doesn’t mean anything.””
“No?””
I looked at him.
“Then explain.””
Richard rubbed his forehead.
“I was investigating her.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Twenty-three calls?””
“She was suspicious.””
“And you thought hiding it from us was the right thing?””
Richard had no answer.
Because there wasn’t a good one.
Vanessa, who had been silent, suddenly spoke.
“Don’t blame him.””
Everyone looked at her.
Daniel stared.
“What?””
She looked at Richard.
“You were the one who told me about the archive.””
The room exploded.
Richard turned pale.
“You’re lying.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Am I?””
Daniel looked between them.
“Richard?””
The attorney looked furious.
“She’s trying to save herself.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
For the first time all day, she sounded calm.
“I’m done protecting people.””
That sentence surprised everyone.
Including me.
“What are you talking about?”” Daniel asked.
Vanessa looked at Richard.
“You promised me the file.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“You’re insane.””
“You said once I had proof of ownership, everything would change.””
Daniel stepped back.
“Proof of ownership?””
I looked at Richard.
And suddenly, years of trust felt fragile.
“Richard.””
He looked at me.
“Thomas, listen—”
“No.””
My voice was cold.
“Not this time.””
The man who had handled my family’s secrets for years looked smaller.
Older.
Guilty.
Detective Collins stepped forward.
“Mr. Hayes, I need you to explain your involvement.””
Richard looked around.
Then his eyes stopped on me.
“I did what I thought was necessary.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You betrayed my family.””
Richard looked at him.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I saved your family.””
Nobody understood.
Not until he reached inside his briefcase.
And removed a second envelope.
“I was going to give this to Thomas when I had proof.””
My heart stopped.
“What is that?””
Richard looked at me.
“The original agreement between your father and Edward Carter.””
Daniel stared.
“The real one?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
He placed it on the desk.
“But that’s not the worst part.””
I opened the envelope.
The first page was enough to make my hands go cold.
Because at the bottom was a signature.
Not my father’s.
Not Edward Carter’s.
Someone else’s.
Someone who had no reason to be there.
May you like
A name I never expected to see.
William Whitmore.
