Chapter 7: The Recording From The Basement
The basement smelled like dust, cold concrete, and something metallic.
I stood outside the police barrier with Daniel beside me, but neither of us spoke.
The hospital that was supposed to be the safest place in my life had become a maze of secrets.
A place where people entered with smiles and left with lies.
Detective Harris returned from downstairs after almost an hour.
His face told me everything before he said a word.
Michael was dead.
My stomach twisted.
Not because I knew him well.
I barely knew him at all.
But because he was the one person who had tried to warn me.
And now he was gone.
“Was it an accident?”” Daniel asked.
Detective Harris looked at him.
“No.””
The word landed like a stone.
Daniel closed his eyes.
I grabbed the edge of the hallway table to steady myself.
“What happened?””
“We’re still investigating,” Harris said carefully.
“But Michael had injuries consistent with an attack.””
Daniel looked sick.
“Who would do that?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew the answer.
Someone who needed Michael silent.
The detective held up an evidence bag.
Inside was a small voice recorder.
“This was found beside him.””
Daniel stared at it.
“That’s what he meant.””
“What?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
“When Michael came to our house, he said if anything happened to him, the recording would explain everything.””
Detective Harris nodded.
“We recovered the audio.””
My heart started pounding.
“Play it.””
The detective looked at me.
“Emma, are you sure?””
I nodded.
“I need to know.””
We moved into a private conference room.
The lights were too bright.
The walls felt too close.
Detective Harris placed the recorder on the table.
A click.
Static.
Then a voice.
Michael’s voice.
“If you’re hearing this, I’m probably dead.””
Daniel covered his mouth.
The recording continued.
“I don’t have much time. I found out the truth about the Carter family trust.””
I looked at Daniel.
The detective turned up the volume.
“The trust was never just about money. It was created because of a promise between two families.””
My grandfather.
Daniel’s grandfather.
The photograph suddenly made sense.
Michael continued.
“The original agreement was simple. The first child born from both bloodlines would inherit everything.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked confused too.
The recording continued.
“Years ago, both families arranged marriages to keep the inheritance connected.””
My heartbeat became louder.
“No…”
Daniel whispered.
Michael’s voice shook.
“They tried before. They failed. But when Daniel met Emma, they realized history was repeating itself.””
I stared at Daniel.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I didn’t know.””
The recording continued.
“The pregnancy changed everything. Once Emma gave birth, the trust would become permanent.””
Detective Harris leaned closer.
“So the baby was targeted because of the inheritance.””
Michael’s voice became lower.
“But there’s another reason.””
A pause.
A long pause.
Then:
“Emma’s daughter is not just the heir.””
The room went completely still.
“She is proof.””
I felt a chill.
“Proof of what?””
Michael continued.
“Proof that the families manipulated everything for generations.””
The recording crackled.
“I found documents. Birth records. Marriage agreements. They have been controlling who inherits and who doesn’t.””
Daniel looked at me.
“They planned our marriage?””
I couldn’t answer.
My entire relationship suddenly felt like a stranger’s life.
Every memory.
Every moment.
Every coincidence.
Michael’s voice returned.
“Daniel, if you’re hearing this, I’m sorry.””
Daniel froze.
“He knew.””
The recording continued.
“You were the only person I trusted. But you need to tell Emma the truth.””
Daniel’s face changed.
I looked at him.
“What truth?””
The recording stopped.
Static filled the room.
Detective Harris checked the device.
“That’s all.””
I stared.
“No.””
“There may be more data, but we need to recover it.””
I turned toward Daniel.
“You knew something.””
He looked devastated.
“Emma…”
“You knew.””
“I knew my family had secrets.””
“Did you know about me?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Did you know our marriage might have been planned?””
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation hurt more than any answer.
I stood.
“You did.””
He looked at me.
“I found out after we got married.””
My voice dropped.
“And you stayed?””
“I loved you.””
I laughed sadly.
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
“Or did you love the future your family wanted?””
Daniel looked like I had slapped him.
“No.””
But before he could say more, Detective Harris’s phone rang.
He answered.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
A pause.
“Are you sure?””
He looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
“We found the person who delivered the medication.””
My breath stopped.
“Who?””
Detective Harris slowly lowered the phone.
“It wasn’t Rachel.””
A cold silence filled the room.
“Then who?””
May you like
He looked at Daniel.
“The delivery was made by someone using your husband’s name.””
