Chapter 18: The Woman Behind Everything

The tracking mark changed everything.

The hospital locked down immediately.

Every person who had accessed Lily’s records was investigated.

Every nurse.

Every doctor.

Every visitor.

But the most terrifying discovery came from Detective Harris.

The mark had been placed before Lily was born.

“During pregnancy?”” Daniel asked.

Harris nodded.

“How?””

“Through medical equipment.””

My hands shook.

“So someone at the hospital was involved.””

“Yes.””

I looked around.

The walls.

The machines.

The room where I had believed my daughter was safe.

Nothing felt safe anymore.

Rachel sat quietly beside Ava’s empty bed.

“She took Ava because she knew about the marker.””

Harris nodded.

“But why now?””

I looked at the note.

The heir is gone.

“They wanted Ava and Lily together.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Why?””

Before anyone could answer, my mother spoke.

Everyone turned.

She had been silent for hours.

But now she looked defeated.

“She’s right.””

I stared.

“Who?””

My mother looked at the door.

“The woman who took Ava.””

Detective Harris stepped closer.

“Who is she?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Her name is Dr. Evelyn Shaw.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Detective Harris reacted.

“You know her?””

My mother nodded.

“She was the lead researcher.””

My blood went cold.

“You worked with her?””

“No.””

My mother looked ashamed.

“I worked against her.””

Nobody believed her.

Not after everything.

But she continued.

“She was the one who convinced the families that the children belonged to them.””

Daniel looked furious.

“And you let her?””

“I tried to stop her.””

“You poisoned my wife.””

My mother flinched.

“I know.””

The guilt in her face was real.

But it didn’t erase anything.

Detective Harris asked:

“Where would she take Ava?””

My mother looked at me.

“The original facility.””

I frowned.

“What facility?””

She hesitated.

“The place where this all started.””

A hidden research center.

A place abandoned years ago.

A place nobody was supposed to know existed.

Except Evelyn Shaw.

Except my family.

Except the people who had controlled our lives.

The police prepared to leave.

Daniel came to me.

“I’m going with you.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t have to.””

“Yes.””

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I spent years protecting secrets.””

He looked at me.

“I’m done.””

For the first time in days, I believed him.

We reached the old facility just before midnight.

It was hidden beyond an abandoned property outside the city.

The building looked dead.

Broken windows.

Rusting doors.

A place forgotten by everyone.

Except the people who needed it.

Detective Harris opened the door.

Inside were rooms filled with files.

Medical equipment.

Photographs.

A history of stolen lives.

Rachel stopped in the hallway.

“She was here.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Who?””

“My whole childhood.””

She touched the wall.

“This place.””

We moved deeper inside.

Then we heard a voice.

“You came.””

Everyone froze.

A woman stepped out of the shadows.

Older.

Calm.

Confident.

Dr. Evelyn Shaw.

She looked at me.

Not Daniel.

Not Harris.

Me.

“You look exactly like your grandmother.””

I stepped forward.

“Where is Ava?””

She smiled.

“Safe.””

“Where is my daughter?””

Her smile faded.

“She is safe too.””

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn walked closer.

“You still think I’m the enemy.””

A pause.

“But I’m the only person who can save them.””

Detective Harris raised his weapon.

“Step away.””

Evelyn ignored him.

She looked at me.

“Your family lied about the experiment.””

I stared.

“What experiment?””

She smiled sadly.

“The one your grandmother started.””

I froze.

“No.””

“Yes.””

She pulled out a file.

A file with my name.

“My dear Emma…”

She opened it.

“You were never the victim.””

May you like

My heart stopped.

“You were the beginning.””
