Chapter 13: My Mother’s Final Lie

The room went silent after Ava said the name.

My mother.

The woman who held my hand when I was sick.

The woman who cried when I told her I was pregnant.

The woman who kissed my forehead and called Lily her miracle.

The woman who had always said family was everything.

Ava’s small voice repeated it.

“Your mother came to our house.””

I stared at her.

“Sweetheart… are you sure?””

Ava nodded.

“She had the same necklace.””

My mother’s necklace.

The one she never took off.

Detective Harris immediately wrote something down.

“When did this happen?””

Ava looked at Rachel.

Rachel’s face had lost all color.

“Tell them.””

Rachel looked at the little girl.

Then at me.

“I didn’t want her involved.””

My anger rose.

“You didn’t want her involved?””

My voice shook.

“You tried to kill my baby.””

Rachel looked down.

“I know.””

“No. You don’t.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to decide who deserves forgiveness.””

Daniel stood beside me.

“Rachel, tell the truth.””

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she nodded.

“Your mother came to me after Ava was born.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she want?””

Rachel looked at me.

“She wanted Ava gone.””

The words cut through the room.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Why?””

“Because Ava proved the trust existed.””

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“Explain.””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“Your families believed the inheritance belonged to a perfect heir. But Ava was born before the agreement was finalized.””

She looked at Daniel.

“She was the first proof that the genetic marker was real.””

I frowned.

“Then why hide her?””

Rachel looked ashamed.

“Because your mother found out Ava existed.””

I felt sick.

“My mother knew?””

“Yes.””

“Before I even met Daniel?””

Rachel nodded.

“She knew both families were looking for the next child.””

Detective Harris looked at my mother’s file.

“So she tried to remove the competition.””

Rachel nodded.

“She told me if Ava disappeared, the trust would remain uncertain.””

Daniel clenched his fists.

“And you listened?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was scared.””

I almost laughed.

Again.

Everyone was scared.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an excuse.

But Lily was the one who almost paid the price.

“I was pregnant,” I whispered.

Rachel looked at me.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice broke.

“You will never know what it feels like to put your hand on your stomach and wonder if your baby is still alive.””

Rachel started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked away.

Sorry did not erase fear.

Sorry did not erase pain.

Detective Harris turned toward the hallway.

“We need to speak with your mother.””

But before he could leave, the door opened.

My mother stood there.

Everyone froze.

She looked at Rachel.

Then at Ava.

Then at me.

For the first time in my life, I saw fear on her face.

Not sadness.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“You found her.””

I stared.

“You knew.””

My mother’s lips parted.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t call me that like you still know me.””

She looked at Lily’s ultrasound photo on the table.

“I was trying to protect you.””

The words almost made me smile.

“Protect me?””

I stepped closer.

“You poisoned me.””

Her face changed.

“I didn’t.””

“You hid the documents.””

“I was trying to stop your father.””

“You let Rachel attack me.””

“I didn’t know she would do that.””

Detective Harris stepped forward.

“Mrs. Carter, you need to come with us.””

My mother looked at him.

Then back at me.

“I never wanted you hurt.””

I stared.

“Then why?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I knew what would happen if Lily was born.””

The room went quiet.

“What?””

My mother whispered:

“The trust was never the real danger.””

Detective Harris frowned.

“Then what was?””

My mother looked at Daniel.

Then at Ava.

Then at Lily’s ultrasound.

“The families don’t just want the inheritance.””

A chill ran through me.

“What do they want?””

My mother’s voice dropped.

“They want the child.””

Nobody moved.

“What does that mean?””

She looked directly at me.

“It means your baby was never the prize.””

May you like

A pause.

“She was the key.””
