Chapter 10: The Child Who Was Hidden

The photograph sat between us like a weapon.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody spoke.

The ultrasound image was just a piece of paper, but it carried the weight of a secret that had been buried for years.

Daniel stared at it.

His face had gone completely pale.

“I don’t understand.””

Detective Harris folded his arms.

“That’s why we’re here.””

Daniel looked at him.

“My first wife lost the baby.””

“According to who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That silence said more than words.

I looked at him.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“I was told she miscarried.””

“By who?””

His jaw tightened.

“My family.””

The room became quiet.

My father looked down.

Like he already knew where this was going.

Detective Harris noticed.

“You knew.””

My father didn’t respond.

“You knew there was a child.””

“I suspected.””

I felt anger rise.

“You suspected?””

My father looked at me.

“Emma, you don’t understand how powerful these families are.””

I laughed bitterly.

“No. I understand perfectly.””

I pointed at my stomach.

“They hurt my baby because of money.””

Nobody corrected me.

Because it was true.

Detective Harris picked up the ultrasound.

“The date on this image is two months after Daniel’s first wife supposedly lost the baby.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because she died before then.””

Detective Harris looked at him.

“Are you sure?””

Daniel froze.

The question hung in the air.

I watched the realization hit him.

Not all at once.

Slowly.

Painfully.

“Her death certificate…”

Detective Harris nodded.

“Has inconsistencies.””

Daniel stood.

“You think she was alive?””

“We think someone wanted everyone to believe she wasn’t.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Detective Harris looked at the documents.

“That’s what we need to find out.””

My father suddenly spoke.

“It was my father.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

My father’s face was filled with shame.

“Your grandfather and mine created this entire system.””

He looked at me.

“They believed bloodlines mattered more than people.””

I felt sick.

“So they controlled marriages.””

“Yes.””

“They controlled pregnancies.””

“Yes.””

“And when someone didn’t follow the plan…”

My father looked away.

“They removed the problem.””

The words made the room colder.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You knew about this?””

“I knew pieces.””

“You let this happen?””

My father’s eyes filled with regret.

“I was weak.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You were afraid.””

“Yes.””

“And people like you always call it fear when you choose silence.””

He had no response.

The detectives searched through the old records for hours.

Then they found something.

A hospital name.

A maternity clinic that had closed seven years earlier.

Detective Harris pointed at the file.

“This clinic handled your first wife’s pregnancy.””

Daniel stared.

“I’ve never seen this.””

“Because someone removed parts of the record.””

My hands tightened.

“Can we find the child?””

The detective looked at me.

“We’re going to try.””

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

Daniel sat beside the window.

Neither of us knew what to say.

Finally, he whispered:

“I should have told you.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

“I was ashamed.””

“You should have been honest.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

I looked at my daughter’s ultrasound on the table.

“Do you love me?””

Daniel turned.

“Yes.””

“Do you love Lily?””

His eyes filled.

“More than anything.””

“Then prove it.””

He nodded.

“I will.””

Before he could say more, there was a loud knock.

Detective Harris entered.

His face was serious.

“We found the child.””

Daniel stood immediately.

“Where?””

The detective hesitated.

“She’s alive.””

I felt a strange wave of relief.

A baby had survived.

A child had escaped.

Then he finished the sentence.

“But she isn’t where we expected.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where is she?””

Detective Harris looked at Daniel.

“She’s been living under a different name.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What name?””

The detective opened the file.

And the moment I saw the photograph attached…

I forgot how to breathe.

May you like

Because the child’s guardian was someone I knew.

Someone who had been standing beside my family the entire time.
