Chapter 17: The Child They Came For

The hospital became chaos.

Doctors ran through the halls.

Security guards searched every exit.

Parents held their children tighter.

And I stood frozen beside the empty bed.

Ava was gone.

The little girl who had spent her life hiding.

The little girl who had finally found her father.

Taken again.

Rachel was breaking apart.

“She was right here.””

Her voice cracked.

“I promised her.””

Daniel put a hand on her shoulder.

“Rachel.””

She pushed him away.

“No.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I spent seven years protecting her.””

I watched her.

For the first time, I saw something other than anger.

I saw a mother.

A damaged one.

A complicated one.

But still a mother.

Detective Harris examined the room.

“No forced entry.””

Daniel frowned.

“How?””

Harris looked at the security system.

“The power outage was intentional.””

I felt cold.

“Someone inside did this.””

He nodded.

The words from my grandmother’s letter came back.

Someone inside the family.

Someone close.

Detective Harris checked the cameras.

“Wait.””

Everyone gathered around.

The footage showed the hallway.

A figure walking toward Ava’s room.

A woman.

Wearing a hospital coat.

Rachel stepped closer.

“I know her.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Rachel’s face went pale.

“She worked for your mother.””

Detective Harris zoomed in.

The image became clearer.

And I recognized her too.

She had been at family events.

Serving food.

Cleaning the house.

Always quiet.

Always invisible.

“My mother’s assistant.””

Harris nodded.

“Her name is Linda Walker.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Why would she take Ava?””

Nobody answered.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Daniel answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

Calm.

Controlled.

“Put Emma on the phone.””

Daniel looked at me.

I took it.

“Who is this?””

The woman laughed softly.

“You sound just like your grandmother.””

My blood ran cold.

“Where is Ava?””

“She’s safe.””

“Let me talk to her.””

A pause.

Then Ava’s voice.

“Emma?””

My knees almost gave out.

“Ava?””

“I’m okay.””

I closed my eyes.

“Listen to me. Stay calm.””

The woman took the phone back.

“You’re a good person, Emma.””

I hated how normal she sounded.

“How do you know me?””

“Because I’ve known you since before you knew yourself.””

I felt sick.

“What do you want?””

“The same thing everyone wants.””

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“You don’t get to talk about her like she’s a thing.””

Silence.

Then the woman said:

“That’s why your grandmother liked you.””

My heart stopped.

“You knew my grandmother?””

“Yes.””

“Who are you?””

The woman sighed.

“I’m the person who kept this family alive.””

I looked at Detective Harris.

He was listening.

“She’s not a person to you.””

The woman laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That Lily and Ava are not accidents.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“The marker appeared because of generations of planning.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Her voice became colder.

“Your families spent decades trying to create them.””

I looked at my daughter’s ultrasound photo.

“And you want them.””

“I want the future.””

My hands shook.

“You won’t get my baby.””

The woman was silent.

Then she said:

“You already gave her to us.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Check Lily’s medical bracelet.””

The call ended.

Everyone rushed toward me.

Daniel looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

I looked down.

At the bracelet around my wrist.

The one the hospital gave me.

The one connected to Lily’s records.

I grabbed it.

Something was hidden underneath.

A tiny symbol.

A symbol I had never noticed.

Detective Harris looked at it.

His face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

He stepped back.

“That symbol…”

“Tell me.””

His voice was quiet.

“That’s not a hospital code.””

I stared.

“What is it?””

He looked at me.

“It’s a tracking mark.””

The room went silent.

May you like

Someone had been monitoring my baby.

From the beginning.
